🌫️ Wildfire Smoke & Your Health: What You Need to Know 🔥

Smoke from the ongoing Canadian wildfires is affecting air quality across Ohio, including our area. Even if you can't smell the smoke, the tiny particles (PM2.5) can travel hundreds of miles and may irritate your lungs, eyes, and airways. Current smoke conditions have prompted air quality concerns across much of the Great Lakes and Midwest.

Who is at higher risk?
• Children
• Older adults
• Pregnant individuals
• People with asthma, COPD, or other lung diseases
• Individuals with heart disease

Protect yourself by:
✅ Checking the Air Quality Index (AQI) before spending time outdoors.
✅ Limiting prolonged outdoor activity, especially exercise, when air quality is poor.
✅ Keeping windows and doors closed when smoke levels are elevated.
✅ Running your air conditioner on recirculate if possible and using a HEPA air purifier or MERV-13 filter if available.
✅ Wearing a properly fitted N95 respirator if you must be outdoors for extended periods during heavy smoke.
✅ Staying well hydrated.

Seek medical care immediately if you experience:
• Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
• Chest pain
• Persistent wheezing
• Severe coughing
• Dizziness or worsening of asthma or COPD symptoms

Your health and safety are our priority. If you're experiencing respiratory symptoms or have questions about protecting yourself during poor air quality, we're here to help.

🚨 PUBLIC HEALTH UPDATE: Cyclosporiasis Cases Increasing in Ohio🚨🥬💧

A gastrointestinal illness called cyclosporiasis is being monitored across Ohio and the United States. Cyclosporiasis is caused by the parasite *Cyclospora cayetanensis* and can cause prolonged, sometimes severe diarrhea and dehydration.

📊 *Current Outbreak Information (CDC & Public Health Reports):
• The CDC is monitoring increased cyclosporiasis activity across the United States.
• Recent reports have identified cases across multiple states, including Ohio.
• Ohio has reported a significant increase in cases during this outbreak period, with illnesses identified in multiple communities.

⚠️ Symptoms of Cyclosporiasis May Include:
• Frequent watery diarrhea
• Abdominal cramping and bloating
• Nausea or vomiting
• Loss of appetite
• Fatigue
• Weight loss
• Dehydration

Symptoms may come and go and can last for weeks without treatment.

🦠 How It Spreads:
Cyclospora is usually acquired by consuming food or water contaminated with the parasite. Previous outbreaks have been linked to contaminated fresh produce. Person-to-person spread is uncommon.

✅ Prevention Tips:
✔ Wash fresh fruits and vegetables thoroughly
✔ Practice good hand hygiene
✔ Avoid preparing food for others if you are experiencing diarrhea
✔ Stay hydrated if symptoms occur
✔ Seek medical evaluation for persistent gastrointestinal symptoms

💊 Testing & Treatment:
If cyclosporiasis is suspected, stool testing may be needed. Confirmed infections are typically treated with prescribed antibiotic.

Time for a check up if you experience:
• Persistent diarrhea
• Signs of dehydration
• Severe abdominal pain
• Symptoms lasting several days or worsening symptoms

Stay informed. Stay healthy. ❤️

Summer sleep schedules have your teen feeling off?

😴💤 Sleep Isn't Just About Feeling Rested—It's About Mental Health, Too!💙🌙

Did you know that poor sleep may affect much more than your energy level?

A recent 3-year study of 458 adolescents found that teens who struggled with both insomnia (difficulty falling or staying asleep) AND excessive daytime sleepiness were over 5 times more likely to develop depression than teens with healthy sleep habits. They were also more likely to experience suicidal thoughts. Even teens with only insomnia or only excessive daytime sleepiness had an increased risk of depression.

The good news? Healthy sleep habits are something we can work on together! ❤️

🌟 **Healthy Sleep Tips for Teens & Adults**
🛏️ Stick to the same bedtime and wake-up time—even on weekends.
📱 Turn off phones, tablets, and TVs at least 30–60 minutes before bed.
☀️ Get outside for natural sunlight during the day.
🏃 Stay active with regular exercise.
☕ Avoid caffeine and energy drinks later in the day.
🥗 Don't go to bed overly hungry or overly full.
🌙 Keep your bedroom cool, quiet, and dark.
😌 Develop a relaxing bedtime routine (reading, stretching, deep breathing, or a warm shower).

💤 **How Much Sleep Do We Need?**
👶 Infants (4–12 months): **12–16 hours** (including naps)
🧒 Children (1–2 years): **11–14 hours**
🧒 Preschoolers (3–5 years): **10–13 hours**
🎒 School-age children (6–12 years): **9–12 hours**
🎓 Teens (13–18 years): **8–10 hours**
🧑 Adults (18–60 years): **7 or more hours**
👵 Adults 61–64 years: **7–9 hours**
👴 Adults 65+ years: **7–8 hours**

❤️ **Parents:** If your teen is constantly exhausted, has trouble sleeping, seems withdrawn, irritable, or loses interest in activities they once enjoyed, don't ignore it. Sleep problems can sometimes be an early sign of anxiety or depression.

At Lulu's Health Care Clinic, we're here to help with sleep concerns, mental health, and overall wellness for the whole family. If you or your child are struggling with sleep, let's talk—we're happy to help! 🌙💙

Colorectal Cancer Awareness 🧡

😬😬😬Are you or someone you know putting it off?

😬😬😬 Has your provider already ordered this for you and you haven’t mailed in your Cologuard® sample?

Did you know colorectal cancer is one of the most preventable cancers with regular screening? Early detection truly saves lives — and screening options are easier than ever.

The following information is from the American Cancer Society Guideline for Colorectal Cancer Screening

✨ 45 is the new 50!

• Average-risk adults should begin screening at age 45
• Continue regular screening through age 75
• Ages 76–85 should discuss individualized screening plans with their provider
• Routine screening after age 85 is generally not recommended

⚠️ You may need earlier screening if you have:
• Family history of colorectal cancer
• Personal history of polyps
• Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)
• Genetic conditions such as Lynch syndrome

🏆 The Gold Standard Test:
A colonoscopy remains the gold standard because it allows providers to both detect and remove precancerous polyps during the same procedure.

🏠 Other Screening Options:
There are also convenient at-home screening tests available, including:
• Cologuard® stool DNA testing
• FIT testing (f***l immunochemical test)

The best screening test is the one that actually gets completed. Taking that first step matters!

Your health matters. Prevention matters. Awareness matters. 💙
