As Licensed Massage Therapists, we get asked a lot of random questions. Here's a topic that has come up several times recently. What other questions do you have for us?
A quick note to remember: Please wait at least 72 hours after Botox, injections, immunizations, OR being sick before receiving a massage!
Massage increases circulation and can leave you feeling worse if your body is already dealing with inflammation, side effects, or illness.
After immunizations, injections, or Botox (whether in the face or body), you also want to avoid unnecessary pressure or movement around the treated area. Massaging over or near a freshly injected area can: interfere with how the medication or substance is absorbed, increase inflammation or irritation, raise the risk of bruising or bleeding, possibly introduce infection, and in some cases, cause product migration (like with cosmetic fillers).
It's always best to check with your provider before receiving any massage after any of the above. They may say to wait 24-72 hours, or up to 2 weeks. Depending on the provider, they may not think to tell you this at the time of your injection or immunization, so be sure to ask! When in doubt, please reach out and we can get you rescheduled for a later date. Your body will get much more from the massage when it is ready.
