One of the questions that comes up after someone starts exploring Spravato: "What if I need this long-term? Is that even safe?" π
It's a smart question, and it deserves a straight answer.
Spravato was FDA-approved with a maintenance phase built into the treatment model. Long-term use under medical supervision is part of the design, not a workaround. The treatment moves through 3 phases: induction (twice a week for 4 weeks), optimization (1 to 2 times per week for another month), and then maintenance (weekly or every other week, based on how you respond).
Every session at Autumn Leaves Psychiatry includes a check-in with our care team, blood pressure monitoring, and an ongoing evaluation of your response. If something changes, we adjust.
On the question of long-term safety: the most common session-related effects, like dissociation or dizziness, tend to decrease over time for most patients. Current research does not show lasting cognitive impairment when Spravato is used as prescribed in a certified clinical setting.
For patients with chronic treatment-resistant depression, maintenance treatment isn't a last resort. It's the goal: sustained relief, not just a temporary fix.
If you've been waiting to ask these questions, we're here to answer them.
