Good evening, Steve Pringle here with Diakonos Counseling. September 11, 2025…..our first day in the mountains. As we made our way up into the mountains, it was a partly sunny, mild temperature and breezy day. When we arrived at the trailhead, there was a storm brewing in the southwest and heading our way. We hoped to unload the horses, get them saddled and ready to travel the last four miles on a difficult mountain road that could become very dangerous if it rained hard enough. We also had to reconfigure our equipment all onto the truck as it was too dangerous to pull a trailer the last four miles. We finally were ready to go…..three of us riding the horses and one driving the truck. Under normal dry conditions, we knew it would take us just under two hours to make the four mile trip. HOWEVER, THINGS CHANGED QUICKLY! So it is with life sometimes. The storm caught us and it began to rain hard. The wind started blowing really strong and then it began to hail. All we could do was stop and decide when to get into the truck if the hail became too large. Fortunately after about 30 minutes, the storm subsided and moved on. During that 30 minutes, I stood by my horse, soaking wet, beginning to shiver from the cold and thinking multiple random thoughts. As I stood there I began thinking about Charlie Kirk’s sudden death the day before. I began to think about who I am, what I believe and why I believe it. Standing in the middle of a storm when you can’t run and hide can make any of us think about the more serious matters of life. I realized in that moment, that many people have been told what to believe, but they don’t know why they believe it. I decided right there that every day in the mountains I would begin to list all the reasons I believe in Jesus and the Kingdom of God. By the time I left the mountains, I had 13 reasons why I believe what I believe. These reasons do not include the Bible or what others have told me I should believe. Join me next week as I write about Day 2 in the mountains, September 12, 2025. Wishing and praying the very best for each of you.
