Well, time for a new series… how the PT is going to PT herself through hip labrum tear and tendinitis!
I’ve had chronic off and on right hip pain for years. Has never necessarily limited me, I’ve been able to manage it. However, now that I’m weight training 5-6 days/week, it’s become more of an issue. And hey, I met that insurance deductible so why not get an MRI 😅
A rough translation of this for those who don’t understand these findings… the cartilage ring (labrum) of my hip joint has a tear and there is mild “arthritis” of my hip socket. Also had noted tendinitis of my gluteal tendons. How did this happen? Who knows. Combination of repetitive activities, movement changes from back pain, and potentially inflammation from my rheumatoid arthritis is my best guess. Could also just be victim of my own unique anatomy!
Unfortunately these issues have a low chance of fully healing. But that’s okay! Plenty of people function normally and even play competitive sports with injuries like this. What I can do is improve load distribution and surrounding muscle strength, movement control/stability, and the tissues ability to tolerate mechanical stress. That’s where us PTs excel… and how we rehab patients without “healing” them.
Am I rushing to ortho for an injection or surgery? NOPE. Am I going to give up weightlifting? NOPE. But I am going to modify over the next several weeks. If pain persists and it continues to restrict my gym gainZ, then I take the next steps.
Stay tuned for periodic updates and tips for not just managing a similar injury, but managing any sort of injury while also staying active and doing the things you enjoy!
