As PTSD Awareness Month continues, it's important to remember that healing looks different for everyone.

When we think about growth, we often picture ideal conditions; good soil, sunshine, and plenty of room to thrive. But sometimes growth happens in places where we least expect it.

Like a plant pushing its way through cracked concrete, people can find ways to heal, adapt, and grow even after experiencing trauma.

Post-traumatic growth doesn't mean trauma was beneficial, nor does it erase the pain, loss, or challenges that may follow a traumatic event. Instead, it recognizes that some people discover new strengths, deeper relationships, a renewed sense of purpose, or a greater appreciation for life as they move through the healing process.

Growth after trauma is not expected, guaranteed, or measured by any timeline. Every person's journey is different.

During PTSD Awareness Month, we recognize both the realities of trauma and the possibilities that can exist in recovery. Today, on Post-Traumatic Growth Day, we honor the courage it takes to survive and the resilience that can emerge through healing.

It's Wellness Wednesday!

Hot, humid Iowa days can sneak up on you, and hydration becomes even more important in the summer months.

When temperatures rise, your body loses fluids faster through sweat, even if you don’t feel like you’re working hard. Dehydration can lead to headaches, fatigue, dizziness, and overheating.

Simple hydration tips:
-Drink water regularly throughout the day (don’t wait until you’re thirsty)
-Keep a water bottle with you when you’re outside
-Increase fluids if you’re active or spending extended time outdoors
-Consider electrolytes if you’re sweating heavily or spending long periods in the heat (especially during physical activity), as they help replace important minerals your body loses through sweat

What helps you remember to stay hydrated in the summer?

It's Mindfulness Monday!

It’s easy to get caught up thinking about what’s next: Tomorrow’s tasks, next week’s schedule, or things from the past we can’t change. So much of life happens right here, though, in the moment we’re actually in.

Mindfulness is the practice of gently bringing your attention back to now. Not fixing everything, not solving everything, but just noticing where you are, what you’re feeling, and what’s happening around you.

Try taking a pause today: take a slow breath, notice your surroundings, and remind yourself that this moment is enough as it is.

You don’t have to be anywhere else to be okay right now.

Part 2 of our Adult Prom photos is here!

We had so many amazing moments from the night that we had to share just a few more highlights.

From big laughs on the dance floor to sweet candid moments between friends and staff, this night was full of joy from start to finish. Our persons served truly showed up, showed out, and made the event unforgettable.

Events like this are part of our continued commitment to inclusivity and supporting opportunities for the people we serve to actively participate in community life, not just as observers, but as valued, celebrated members of it.

We’re still smiling thinking about how much fun everyone had, and we’re so grateful to have been part of such a meaningful (and very fun!) evening.

We had an incredible time at our Adult Prom, hosted for our persons served and community members!

This event was all about connection, joy, and inclusivity! One of our ongoing goals is to create opportunities for the people we support to get out into the community, try new experiences, and simply have fun together.

And fun was definitely had! From dancing to great music, to getting dressed up and enjoying a night out, the energy was amazing and the smiles said it all. It was wonderful to see everyone letting loose, connecting with others, and making lasting memories.

We truly had so many great photos from the night that we couldn’t fit them all into one post, so be on the lookout for Part 2 coming soon!

We’re so grateful to everyone who helped make this event possible and to all who came out and celebrated with us. Nights like this are a reminder of how important community, belonging, and shared joy really are.

June is Alzheimer's & Brain Awareness Month, a time to learn about Alzheimer's disease and support those affected by it.

Alzheimer's disease is the most common cause of dementia, affecting memory, thinking, and behavior over time. While memory loss is often associated with aging, significant changes in memory, reasoning, and daily functioning should not be considered a normal part of getting older.

Common warning signs include:
• Memory loss that disrupts daily life
• Difficulty completing familiar tasks
• Confusion with time or place
• Trouble finding words while speaking or writing
• Changes in mood, personality, or judgment

While there is currently no cure for Alzheimer's disease, early diagnosis and treatment can help individuals manage symptoms and maintain quality of life.

This month, let's raise awareness, support caregivers, and encourage conversations about brain health.

It's Wellness Wednesday, and June's topic is Outdoor and Seasonal Wellness!

Iowa summers mean longer days outside, but also stronger sun exposure. One of the most important parts of outdoor wellness is protecting your skin.

When spending time outside, remember to:
-Use sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher)
-Reapply every 2 hours if you’re outside for long periods, or after swimming.
-Wear a hat (make sure it covers or shades your ears, too!) or sunglasses when possible
-Seek shade during peak heat (10am–4pm)

Sun safety helps prevent burns now and long-term skin damage later. A little protection goes a long way!

What’s your go-to way to stay sun-safe in the summer?

It's Mindfulness Monday!

Each new day brings a fresh start, no matter what yesterday looked like. We all carry different stresses, routines, and challenges, but today offers a new opportunity to reset and refocus.

Mindfulness doesn’t have to be complicated. It can be as simple as taking a deep breath before starting your day, being present in small moments, or choosing to approach today with patience instead of pressure.

Instead of carrying everything from yesterday forward, try asking yourself: What is one small thing I can do today that supports my wellbeing?

You don’t have to do everything at once. You just have to start with today.
