“I am apt to believe that [Independence Day] will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival...It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty...It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forevermore.” - John Adams
President Adams would be happy with our team’s reverence for this day every year; it’s Dr. Houston’s favorite holiday!
As we walk in neighborhood parades, smoke several pounds of meat, blast patriotic music, enjoy some drinks, eat popsicles, and recreate the “rockets’ red glare” with fireworks, we constantly reflect on the Divine Providence that established these United States, and has preserved her to this point.
We think of those who came to this land both to flee tyranny, and share the gospel of Christ while making a new nation.
We remember those who have fought in every single conflict and war to defend the beacon of liberty that our nation has been from its inception.
We think of the fact that America has always been made of those with a dream and a willingness to both work and fight for it: soldiers, farmers, ranchers, doctors, lawyers, teachers, consultants, freight carriers, tradesmen, artists, and those who have taken on the task of homemaking and raising children.
When asked if the Continental Congress had decided to have a Republic or Monarchy, Benjamin Franklin replied, “A Republic, if you can keep it.”
Many of the Founding Fathers knew that even the government they had established would collapse over time if the people left behind the first principles on which our nation was built.
May we get back to being a people governed by the “Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God,” so that we may continue to properly enjoy our unalienable rights, among which are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.
