A good reminder from the Union County Gov team.
The summer heat affects our pets just as much as it affects us. Here are a few things to keep in mind as temperatures climb:
🐾 Hot pavement burns paws. If you can't hold the back of your hand on the asphalt for 7 seconds, it's too hot for your dog to walk on. Stick to early morning or evening walks, stick to grass when possible, and consider paw protection.
🚗 Never leave a pet in a parked car. Even with windows cracked, temperatures inside a car can reach dangerous levels within minutes.
🎆 July 4th is one of the most stressful days of the year for pets. Loud noises, crowds and unfamiliar places can cause anxiety and panic. Keep pets home, in a safe quiet room or crate, and make sure guests know to be careful going in and out of the house.
🧳 Traveling with your pet? Make sure they are properly identified with a microchip or collar tag, check whether a Health Certificate is required if crossing state lines, and plan for regular bathroom breaks and water along the way.
Signs of heat stroke in dogs include excessive panting, drooling, weakness, and confusion. If you suspect heat stroke, move your pet to a cool area immediately and contact your veterinarian.
