Do you or someone you know have an Ostomy?
Don’t know what it is? An Ostomy is a surgically created opening in the body that allows waste to leave the body when either the digestive or urinary system isn’t working properly or needs time to heal.
Common types:
- Colostomy (Large Intestine)
- Ileostomy (Small Intestine)
- Urostomy (Urinary System)
Not all ostomies are the same. Some caused by trauma, others caused by chronic conditions. But — many ostomy patients continue to live full and healthy lives, still able to do most things they did before such as travel, exercise, work, and more!
The tough part?
• Learning how to care for the ostomy at home which includes but is not limited to skin care, stoma care, and bag changes.
• Coping with having an ostomy is not something that is linear — some patients can adjust quickly, but some patients struggle (completely expected and understandable).
Having a great support system is very helpful in this process, Although not everyone has that.
IRMC has been hosting these for a while now — a FREE support group! Educational resources, Tips and tricks, and coping strategies are available. Flyer posted below, which takes place on 5/27 at 2pm. Call 724-464-2731 to find out more info and reserve your spot.
