The story behind the iconic 9/11 flag-raising photo

The exposure lasted just 1/640 of a second.
There was no reason for photographer Tom Franklin to think his photo of firefighters attempting to raise the American flag would become anything more than one photograph among the hundreds taken at Ground Zero that day. But for 25 years, his image has lived on in the hearts and minds of millions and has become part of the visual history of one of the darkest days in American history.
It has appeared on a U.S. postage stamp that raised more than $10 million for victims of the attacks. It hangs in museums, resides in the Library of Congress, and could be found in firehouses, classrooms, government buildings, and homes across the country.
And while the photograph hasn't changed, Lower Manhattan most certainly has.

Former Johnson County Coroner, Mike Pruitt, has resigned from his position as of 12:00 a.m. Aug. 5, 2026; he is no longer an elected official of Johnson County.

Amanda Swartz, Johnson County chief deputy coroner, is the interim coroner until a replacement is caucused in under statute.

As part of his plea agreement to resign on or before Jan. 1, 2027, Mike Pruitt has effectively resigned as Johnson County Coroner on Aug. 5, 2026.

We were notified this morning of the passing of our Health Officer, Dr. John Peterson in Delaware County.

We have meetings scheduled today to appoint a new interim Health Officer. Once I receive an updated burial transit permit signed by the new Health Officer, I will send it out.

Only burial transit permits dated 7/14/2026 or before will be accepted with Dr. Peterson’s name listed.
