I met someone recently who described their traumatic background and addiction history. It was brave to share. This is a common phrasing I hear.
It is usually said out of pain, fear, lack of education, and lack to exposure of good therapeutic experiences.
I naturally encouraged them to join various group supports and work with a therapist. I never said replace the church or God. My encouragement was in addition to the church and God find other resources and supports.
The normal conversation of I tried that, don’t need that, etc. describing how the church, God, and church staff is their therapy.
While spiritual disciplines and belonging to a religious community are therapeutic and healing, it is not therapy. When people refuse to seek additional help from trained people they have unrealistic expectations from people. The person refusing to seek additional help will bleed all over innocent people and cause stress to people who did not sign up for their needs.
This is unfair to the church, the volunteers, the leaders, and the members. People who have a savior mentality will burnout from helping these types of individuals.
Collaborate care with medical providers, clinical therapists, and pastors help heal all areas of a person so they become the version God created.
