Bloomington, Indiana (October 17, 2026) - A 19-year-old Indiana University business student from North Carolina died after a Monday afternoon motorcycle crash near the IU Bloomington campus.
Indiana University police were notified at 3:53 p.m. on October 12, about a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of the Ind. 45 Bypass and Matlock Road. A 79 year old Bloomington man driving a SUV told police he was in the left turn lane on the Bypass waiting to turn left onto East Matlock Road. When he saw a break in the traffic, he began turning.
During the turn, a motorcycle suddenly appeared from behind a vehicle in the left lane. Neither driver had time to react as the motorcycle hit the rear passenger door of the car, throwing the cyclist into the car. The driver told police he estimated the motorcycle was traveling about 80 mph. The impact of the crash spun the car around in the road, the report stated.
Three witnesses told police they saw the motorcycle weaving around cars, traveling at high speeds. Dash cam video provided to IU police showed the motorcycle was not visible to the 79-year-old until the crash occurred, the report stated.
The motorcyclist was identified as Rushir R. Sai, 19, of Cary, North Carolina, was transported to a "nearby hospital," where he died the next day. The driver of the car also sustained injuries and was transported to a hospital.
