Many wounds are invisible. Many struggle with PTSD and don't even know it. Know the signs. Where there is help, there is hope 🙏

PTSD isn’t always loud.

It isn’t always flashbacks.
It isn’t always nightmares.
It isn’t always what people see in movies.

Sometimes it looks like:

Overthinking every situation.
Replaying conversations for hours after they end.
Scanning every room for exits.
Sitting with your back to the wall.
Jumping at unexpected sounds.
Feeling tense even when everything seems okay.

Sometimes it looks like avoiding certain places, people, or memories.

Sometimes it looks like always having a backup plan.
Always preparing for the worst.
Always waiting for something to go wrong.

And sometimes it just looks like exhaustion.
Because living in a constant state of alertness is exhausting.

That's why so many people struggle in silence.

Their wounds are invisible.
Their effort is invisible.
Their survival is invisible.

June is PTSD Awareness Month.

So if you're carrying scars from experiences you never should have had to survive, this is your reminder:

What happened to you matters.
What you're carrying is real.
And you deserve to be seen, understood, and supported.

Your strength and resilience in the face of loss inspire us all, and we are forever grateful for the bravery and dedication of our nation’s heroes.

They will never be forgotten.

Regulation is not about feeling good all the time. It’s about getting better at feeling.

The capacity to hold complex feelings is a skill learned through experience and repetition. Mindfulness helps us notice our emotions without judgement or getting overwhelmed by them.

We can’t erase the past. In fact, that was never the goal.
We can work to integrate our experiences into our overall identity rather than let it rule our lives.

Trauma is an undeniable part of your canvas, but there is so much capacity in the next brushstroke choose you to take.

More often than not, what we crave the most as adults are the things we needed as children, but didn’t receive.

Children need to feel seen. They rely on attentiveness, consideration, and coregulation from their caregivers in order to develop a sense of trust and worthiness.

Healthy attachment needs more than just physical reinforcement. Food, clothes, and shelter alone do not provide the attention, support, and validation that’s needed for a child to grow up with a sense of inner self and security. Emotional needs are just as important.

You might have grown up in neglectful environments - physically, emotionally, or both.
However, there is hope.

A person can find and create secure attachment even if it was not modeled in childhood. The capacity for safety and connection can be built over time.

People who have gone through trauma may experience burnout faster than others.

Trauma predisposes the nervous system to being in an activated state, and because of this, it may take less to push a person over the edge in work, caregiving, and keeping up with life’s demands.

Could you be inching towards burnout? Burnout itself can exacerbate symptoms associated with trauma too. It’s important to check in with yourself.

As unexpressed feelings build up, a greater degree of muscular tension is necessary to keep them under wraps.

Someone who is repeatedly punished for emoting learns to be afraid of their inner emotional experience and tightens (armors) the musculature of their body in an effort to hold feelings in and to banish them from awareness.

Holding your breath is a an example of this.
It is a common way we keep feelings at bay, as breathing naturally brings your awareness down to the level of feeling.

Self-kindness is treating yourself like a warm, understanding ally rather than a harsh critic. Imperfection is part of the human experience. Mistakes happen, but that doesn’t mean you’re a mistake yourself.

The three stages of trauma recovery according to trauma psychiatrist and researcher Judith Herman M.D.

It’s important to remember that this is not a simple, linear process. Survivors may move between these stages multiple times as it can be complex and emotionally difficult.
