Andrew is a semitruck driver who was involved in a crash in which his truck rolled over. Andrew was intubated on-site, then admitted to a hospital. He was diagnosed with acute respiratory failure as well as a type of traumatic brain injury called a diffuse axonal injury in which the brain shifts rapidly inside the skull. He also suffered both a subdural hemorrhage (brain bleed) and subdural hygroma (a collection of brain and spinal fluid) in the space between the brain and skull. He eventually received a tracheostomy to continue ventilation, a PEG (feeding) tube, a chest tube, and IV drips to manage blood pressure. He was transferred to Kindred Hospital Indianapolis North for vent weaning, medical care, and rehab.

Upon admission to Kindred, Andrew was not awake and alert and unable to follow commands. He began restorative care for range-of-motion exercises and out-of-bed mobility in a cardiac chair. Eventually, he started waking up and weaning off the vent. Andrew also began physical, occupational, and speech therapy.

At the time of discharge, Andrew had made major gains in his recovery. He was off the vent, decannulated and breathing on his own. He was also off all IV antibiotics. In addition, Andrew could stand, perform self-care tasks, and transfer to a chair with assistance. With the support of a speech therapist, Andrew returned to a regular diet, no longer relying on tube feeding. Andrew was discharged to a community rehabilitation hospital.

Andrew’s wife, Lisa, was very happy with all of the care he received at Kindred. She is ready for the next chapter and to eventually get him home.

Wesley was living his best life with his wife and their dog, Lucy. He became ill with viral pneumonitis superimposed on bacterial pneumonia. Wesley suffered from a severe worsening of his chronic respiratory failure, Atrial fibrillation or AFib (abnormal heart rhythm), heart failure, hypertension, Type 2 diabetes, and anemia.

Wesley arrived at Kindred Hospital Indianapolis North on a ventilator with an endotracheal tube. Respiratory therapists trached him at the bedside and began the hard task of weaning him off the vent. Vent weaning had been unsuccessful a couple of times prior at a skilled nursing facility. The Kindred team weaned him from the vent using Airvo – a type of nasal oxygen therapy – and then weaned him off Airvo to a tracheostomy collar. He worked hard at weaning off the ventilator with the respiratory therapy department and developed a special bond with a few team members – Nikki, Pat, Cindy, Candace, and Tammy. Wound care was also very involved in his treatment and success, as were the rehabilitation, nutrition, pharmacy, and nursing teams.

Wesley left Kindred Indianapolis North off of a ventilator and able to walk 200 feet with a walker. He has been discharged to acute inpatient rehabilitation. The Kindred team is proud of him.

"Respiratory (clinicians) are fierce," Wesley said. "They saved my life."

Willie went to Community Hospital North on Jan. 30, 2026, with abdominal pain and shortness of breath. Initial imaging confirmed a small bowel obstruction, and a follow-up exploratory laparotomy (an operation to examine his internal organs) revealed a dilated proximal and collapsed distal bowel.

After undergoing surgery, Willie experienced respiratory failure due to suspected aspiration and kidney failure that required hemodialysis. He was intubated for a week to support his breathing, and also was treated for bacterial pneumonia.

In March, Willie was transferred to Kindred Indianapolis North for continued dialysis, IV antibiotics, and intensive rehabilitation. During a 58-day stay, he recovered significantly.

Through a multidisciplinary approach that included Kindred teams from nephrology, pharmacy, wound care, and nursing, Willie’s kidney function improved and he transitioned off hemodialysis. He also returned to breathing regular room air.

In addition, Willie made significant progress in his rehabilitation. When he arrived at Kindred, Willie required total assistance for all mobility and activities of daily living, but by the time of discharge, he could walk more than 300 feet with a single-point cane. In addition, with the support of speech-language pathology, he advanced from a pureed diet to eating regular food.

Having met all clinical and functional goals, Willie was able to discharge to his home and reunite with his large family. He extended his appreciation to the team members at Kindred Hospital Indianapolis North for the care they provided during his stay.

Valer experienced cardiac arrest, which resulted in respiratory failure and the need for a ventilator to assist his breathing. He arrived at Kindred Hospital Indianapolis North still on a ventilator after failed attempts to wean. The respiratory team helped him face this challenge, and with hard work from Valer and the team, he was weaned off the vent and successfully decannulated.

The nursing and wound care teams were also highly involved in his treatment. He arrived with a deep tissue pressure injury to his foot, as well as occipital, re**um, and coccyx wounds. These have been healed or significantly reduced in size. The wound care team also helped with his midline abdomen surgical incision.

Valer has been discharged to a skilled nursing facility, where he is excited to continue his recovery and soon get back home.

“I want to thank all of the staff, especially Janeen from Respiratory Therapy," Valer said. "She came in on her day off to get a picture with me. I appreciate her and all of the staff at Kindred."
