💜 SEE THE PERSON. NOT THE DIAGNOSIS.
Dementia changes things. It can change memories, communication, routines, and abilities. But it does not erase the person.
That is something we believe deeply at Homewatch CareGivers of South Indy.
When we walk into someone’s home, we don’t see a diagnosis first. We see a mother. A father. A spouse. A grandparent. A friend. A person with a lifetime of stories, experiences, relationships, dreams, preferences, and personality.
And that person is still there. ❤️
Our approach to dementia care is rooted in dignity, autonomy, security, meaningful engagement, and relationships.
We don’t want to simply do things for someone.
We want to find ways to do things with them.
We offer choices.
We listen beyond the words.
We learn what brings them joy.
We honor their routines and preferences.
We celebrate what they can do.
We create opportunities for purpose and connection.
And when something becomes difficult, we don’t ask, “What’s wrong with them?”
We ask, “What are they trying to tell us?”
Because sometimes what looks like resistance is communication.
Sometimes what looks like confusion is fear.
Sometimes what looks like a difficult moment is simply someone trying to maintain control in a world that feels increasingly unfamiliar.
Our job isn’t to make a person fit into our routine.
Our job is to meet them where they are.
There will be hard days. There will be changes we cannot stop. But even in the midst of those changes, there can still be laughter. Music. Purpose. Connection. A favorite meal. A familiar face. A hand to hold. A reason to smile.
And those moments matter.
Dementia does not take away someone’s worth.
Dementia does not take away their humanity.
Dementia does not mean their life has stopped having meaning.
We believe people living with dementia can continue to grow, connect, participate, make choices, and experience joy.
So when you care for someone living with dementia, look a little closer.
Don’t just see what has been lost.
See who is still there.
See their strengths.
See their story.
See their heart.
And most importantly—
See the person. Always. 💜
