Infatuation can feel electric — but is it connection? 💭 In our latest blog post, Becky VanDenburgh, LCSW, LCAC, breaks down how attachment styles can make intensity masquerade as love, and how to tell the difference so you can build calmer, truer relationships. Read more: https://wix.to/KBJ7SUU

Have you ever lain awake replaying a text conversation, or felt a jolt of anxiety every time your phone buzzes, or wondered why a calm, steady relationship feels almost too quiet compared to the chaos of a past one? None of that means something is wrong with you. It usually just means your nervous s...

Do you consider yourself a deeply empathetic person but find that listening to other people's problems leaves you feeling totally drained, anxious, and exhausted? 🫂😓

There is actually a big difference between true empathy and what psychology calls personal distress.

True empathy is when you can feel compassion for someone else's struggle while keeping your own emotional boundaries intact.

But if you grew up having to manage the unpredictable moods of the adults around you, your wires might be crossed. You aren't just feeling for them your nervous system is absorbing their pain as if it's a direct threat to your survival.

This constant internal alarm leads to deep emotional exhaustion, burnout, and the urge to simply shut down and pull away.

You can be a deeply caring person without sacrificing your own peace. 🤍

I'm Becky, and I can help you build healthier emotional boundaries.

Stop trying to relax your way out of 3:00am insomnia. 🕒😵💫

Your brain is locked in a cortisol‑fueled feedback loop. You need a physical override.

This is a vagus nerve reset —by moving your eyes in specific, deliberate patterns, you hack your nervous system, forcing an exit from fight or flight and triggering a biological sleep signal.

Here's how:

🔹 Close your eyes and scan side to side – 3 times
🔹 Trace a vertical line (top to bottom) – 3 times
🔹 Then finish with low, slow circles – clockwise 3 times, then counterclockwise 3 times

You aren't just moving your eyes. You're physically de‑escalating your nervous system.

Stop the loop before it starts. 🌙

Do you ever get that literal lump in your throat when you try to stand up for yourself? 🫢

Like your vocal cords are actually paralyzed?

It isn't a lack of willpower. It's a biological survival response controlled by an ancient alarm center deep in your midbrain.

When your nervous system senses conflict as an overwhelming threat, it shifts into freeze state to keep you safe and hidden from perceived danger. Your brain literally blocks the muscles in your vocal cords to force you to stay quiet.

You aren't being weak. Your body is just trapped in a survival collapse.

But the good news? You can rewire this response and reclaim your voice. 🗣️

I'm Becky, and I can help you safely unblock your nervous system.

We've heard the word narcissist thrown around but what is actually happening inside the brain of someone with these traits? 🧠

It's not actually about too much self‑love.

It's the opposite.

It is the self that never formed properly. They don't generate their own worth, so they have to mime it from you—through your praise, or even your pain.

That is why the cycle of love bombing, devaluation, and discarding is so disorienting. You aren't being treated badly because you changed. You're being used as a source of stability for someone who has none.

If you're questioning your own reality that's actually a sign of what this abuse does. It's not just in your head. It's a predictable survival mechanism for them, and a deeply painful experience for you.

I'm breaking down the science behind these tactics and why books like Manipulated offer such a rare look inside this mindset.

Do you constantly look happy and accommodating on the outside but inwardly feel angry, rebellious, and completely misunderstood? 😊😤

You aren't crazy. And you aren't two‑faced.

In psychology, this is known as the divided self and it's the core component of a trauma response called self‑silencing.

If you grew up learning that expressing your true feelings caused conflict or made you lose love, your nervous system created a compliant outer mask to keep you safe. You learned to automatically appease others while your true self was locked away, holding onto unspoken resentment.

Over time, this deep internal split causes massive emotional burnout and makes you forget who you truly are.

You don't have to live behind a mask forever.

I'm Becky, and I can help you safely reconnect to your authentic voice. 🗣️

When you experience trauma or prolonged stress, your nervous system learns to protect you by building armor. 🛡️

This armor shows up in real life as avoidance or the constant need to stay busy so you don't have to feel the underlying discomfort.

In clinical terms, this is called experiential avoidance —and it's the single greatest predictor of chronic distress.

Opening up isn't about liking the pain or resigning yourself to it. It's about dropping the exhausting, baseline war against your own emotional experience.

This pillar relies on two core shifts:

Acceptance – Making physical room for heavy emotions like grief, shame, or anxiety without immediately trying to numb or run away from them.

Diffusion – Learning to step back from your thoughts instead of treating the internal voice that says "I'm completely broken" as an absolute truth. You learn to see it simply as a thought passing through your awareness.

When you open up, you stop spending all your daily energy fighting against yourself and free up your mental capacity for the life that is actually happening right around you. 🌿

If you are the person everyone relies on to keep the peace… you know the exact cost of keeping it. 🤍

You say yes to projects you don't have bandwidth for because the thought of saying no makes your stomach drop.

You let boundaries slide with friends or family because it feels easier to swallow your own frustration than to risk making a scene.

You manage high‑stakes environments at work with total composure—but internally, you're running on empty. Quietly building a baseline of resentment toward the people you love most.

For a long time, you might have believed that setting a boundary meant starting a fight.

But in my clinical work, we look at boundaries differently: a boundary isn't a wall to push people out it's a clear door that lets people know exactly how to love and respect you, without you having to disappear in the process.

Your needs are non‑negotiable.

The cycle of self‑abandonment stops the moment you decide your peace is worth protecting.

👇 Let's work together to clear out old survival patterns and give your nervous system the tools to speak up with confidence. My link is in the bio below.
