AAC Awareness Month: Part 2 🗣️💬

At Children’s Therapy Connection, we believe everyone deserves a way to communicate! AAC can look different for everyone, which is why we’re excited to share some of the many AAC options available right here at our clinic! 🙌

From core boards and communication buttons to speech-generating devices in both regular and mini sizes, we have a variety of tools to support communication in ways that work best for each individual.

These resources are available for our kiddos to explore and use during their therapy sessions as we support communication, language development, and self-expression!

Because communication looks different for everyone, and every voice deserves to be heard! 🧡

🎃 Halloween can be overwhelming for children with sensory sensitivities... But with a little planning, it can still be fun for everyone! Here are 5 tips to make the holiday more enjoyable:

1️⃣ Prepare Ahead
Talk about the day, read a Halloween-themed book, or role-play what to expect.

2️⃣ Choose Comfortable Costumes
Let your child wear soft clothes or PJs under their costume... Or skip the costume and decorate a wagon instead!

3️⃣ Pick a Calm Environment
Trick-or-treat early on quiet streets. Avoid homes with flashing lights or loud, scary decorations.

4️⃣ Practice Makes Progress
Rehearse saying "trick-or-treat" and "thank you." Visit familiar homes, and use AAC or other communication tools if needed.

5️⃣ Create New Traditions
Not every Halloween needs candy and costumes! Try pumpkin painting, baking, or a movie night instead.

🎧 Bonus Tip: Don’t forget to bring noise-canceling headphones, a comfort item, or a favorite fidget toy. These items can help your child stay regulated and feel secure throughout the festivities!

✨ A sensory-friendly Halloween is a successful one!

Pumpkin painting is more than just a fun fall activity! This First Steps kiddo is building important skills through play with the help of our amazing occupational therapist, Lauren! From exploring tactile sensory input and strengthening fine motor skills to practicing attention, encouraging creativity, and so much more, every brushstroke is an opportunity to learn and grow! 🖌️🎃

Looking for a fun fall activity to try at home? Pumpkin painting is a great alternative to pumpkin carving for little ones! It’s a toddler-friendly way to explore textures, practice hand-eye coordination, and get creative without the sharp tools. 🎨

At Children’s Therapy Connection, we believe some of the best learning happens through play! 😀

Fall break is in full swing and the holidays are just around the corner. We get it, cancellations happen! We promise we won’t *actually* take it personally! 😂 Just make sure you let us know at least 4 hours in advance to avoid a no-show! ❤️

Ps: We love Ms. Paige! How funny is she?!

October is AAC Awareness Month! 🗣️💬

Every voice matters! Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) includes tools and strategies that help people communicate, from picture boards to speech-generating devices. Everyone deserves a way to express themselves, share their thoughts, and be heard!

This month, we’ll be sharing fun therapy activities and highlighting some of the amazing kiddos at Children’s Therapy Connection who use AAC! 🌟

First up: Ms. Morgan’s (SLP) kiddos explored pumpkin dough while working on sequencing, spatial concepts, expanding vocabulary, speech sounds, and AAC... All through a fun, sensory-rich activity! 🎃 A little messy, a lot of learning!

Every voice deserves to be heard! 🧡

Preparing for the dentist! 🦷

During a speech & OT co-treat this week, D’Ante practiced an important functional skill! OT helps children build independence with everyday activities, including preparing for routines like going to the dentist. 💙

D’Ante and his therapists practiced leaning back on the mat, getting comfortable with the vibration of the Z-Vibe, and learning the steps of a dental visit. He even wrote down the steps himself! 📝👏 Way to go, team!

Great therapy starts with great collaboration! ❤️🍎

Our OTs and SLPs regularly meet in small groups to learn from one another, problem-solve tricky feeding situations, and share clinical knowledge around feeding, behavior, family engagement, and more. These conversations help us continue growing as clinicians and bring new ideas and perspectives into the therapy we provide every day.

We’re always learning so we can better support the children and families we serve!
