We are closed today but one of our partnered wildlife rehabbers could use your help! We are safe. 🩷

Our entire community is underwater right now, and we want everyone who has been worried about us and our animals to know that most of our animals are warm, dry, and safe. We are incredibly grateful for that. Our two ducks were washed out of their enclosure, and we have not been able to locate them, however I am confident that they will be alright.

This flooding has also caused a major setback for us. All of our deer feed and squirrel feed has been ruined by floodwater. These are supplies we rely on every single day to keep our patients fed and healthy.

So, while we are safe, we do have an emergency need for funding to replace what we lost and keep food on hand while our community recovers.

If you are able to help, even a few dollars makes a difference right now. If you can’t donate, sharing this post is just as important. We know so many people are hurting and dealing with their own losses, and we don’t take any help for granted.

Thank you for checking on us, for caring about our animals, and for standing beside Wild Mother Nature through this.

It's that time of the year where we introduce new doctors! 🎉

First up, we would like everyone to give a warm welcome to Dr. Bee!
Originally from New York's Hudson valley, she spent over a decade as a a Licensed Veterinary Technician in exotic animal, emergency, and specialty medicine.
Dr. Bee earned her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Tufts University in 2024 before completing two year long internships.
She is dedicated to patient care by working with pet owners to create treatment plans to best fit each pet's medical needs and each family's goals.
Outside of work, she enjoys reading, crafting, and cheering on her favorite hockey teams. She shares her home with her husband, a mischievous cat, and a Russian tortoise!
We are so thrilled to have her on our team! 💕

Yesterday was International Owl Awareness Day and they sure are a favorite to see at AEAC! 🦉
Pictured in order, our team has seen 8 Barred Owls, 7 Great Horned Owls, and 4 Eastern Screech Owls, making a total of 19 owls treated in 2026 so far!
Indiana is home to 8 different species of owls, 4 of which live here year round while the other 4 are winter migrants but can live in northern Indiana throughout the year. These species include the Barn Owl, a state endangered species, with less than 50 active nests.
Owl fun facts:
They have 14 cervical vertebrae which is twice as many as humans, this is why they can rotate their neck so far!
Owls hunt at night and are almost totally silent when flying!
They unique flat faces direct sounds to their ears, which are staggered, helping them locate prey!

The face you make when you have a doctors appointment vs when you finally return home to the comfort of your bed. 🦇

Did you know that Indiana is home to 12 species of bats, many of which are state and/or federally endangered? Bats, like this Big Brown Bat pictured below, are insectivores who play a large role in keeping our ecosystems healthy by providing pest control services for free! Indiana DNR estimates that bats save the agricultural system $3.7 billion per year by eating so many insects!
While bats are small, cute, and extremely fascinating, they can still pose a risk to humans. Yep, we're talking rabies. Though less than 1% of bats test positive for rabies each year, it is still important to avoid direct contact with them.

A reunion for the ages! 🦆
When River, a resident education animal with WildCare INC, came to see us for a wellness visit, she was able to be reunited with her former caretaker, Dr. Matt!
It was such a surprise for Dr. Matt who was very happy to hear that River is doing well!
We were able to find a picture of Dr. Matt during her time at WildCare with River and get an updated picture of them together! River has been an education animal for about 14 years now after being found alone outside as a hatchling.
It was so special to see old friends reunite again. 💕

Thursday, July 8th, a Good Samaritan brought a ferret into AEAC that was found in the Indianapolis area. He is currently safe and sound at the clinic!

You must be able to provide proof of ownership via identifiable markings and/or photos!

Triplet trouble!!
These 3 Virginia Opossums are currently with Wildcare Inc. rehabilitators preparing to be returned to the wild!
However, all 3 little guys needed to come see AEAC for wounds on their tail that required partial amputation.
Luckily we had 3 doctors willing to step in and help! This was our first triple opossum tail amputation and everyone (opossums included) did great! Thankfully for these guys, they did not lose much of their tails and can still be released into their natural habitat! 💕

Last but definitely not least, let’s celebrate Dr. Lennox! 🎉

An incredible surgeon who gives her all to every patient she sees. She’s described by the staff as being the most hardworking person who will teach you something new every day. Not only does she do a lot for her staff, she works endlessly as a leader in exotic animal medicine. If she’s not at work, she’s teaching a lab at a conference or lecturing for doctors learning more about the species we work with. And while doing all of this, you can sometimes catch her saying the funniest things or letting the team teach her new slang terms.

AEAC would not be here without her and we are very grateful 💚
