I am a constituent writing to oppose the provision in HB 1003 that would eliminate the Midwifery Committee. Certified Direct Entry Midwives provide essential care across Indiana, especially as access to obstetric services continues to decline. Eliminating this committee would reduce appropriate oversight and harm maternal and infant care.

I respectfully urge you to oppose this provision of HB 1003.

Meet your teacher!

🌿Katie graduated from Indiana University Indianapolis in 2011 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing. Over the past 14 years, she has gained extensive experience across various nursing specialties, including Critical Care Labor & Delivery, Pulmonary Medical-Surgical, Medical Intensive Care Unit, Cardiac Outpatient, Labor, Delivery, Recovery & Postpartum, as well as infant wellness at an Infant Health Spa. In 2022, Katie obtained her certification as a Breastfeeding Specialist and officially transitioned into the lactation field. In September 2024, she achieved certification as an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) and currently works as a lactation consultant in both hospital and outpatient settings.

🌿Katie is deeply passionate about educating women on the normal aspects of early lactation, assisting through challenging breastfeeding moments, and providing ongoing support to help women and families meet their lactation and feeding goals. Her personal experience significantly shapes her passion; after successfully breastfeeding her first child, Katie faced severe latching pain with her second but was unaware of available support resources and did not seek assistance. Persistent breastfeeding difficulties with her third child led her to finally seek outpatient lactation services, a decision she describes as eye-opening, educational, and transformative. This experience profoundly influenced Katie’s nursing career path and ignited her passion for lactation consultancy.

🌿Katie resides in Indianapolis with her husband of ten years, their three daughters, and son. In her free time, she enjoys yoga, spending time outdoors, dancing, and cherishing rare quiet moments to read.
