After nearly three decades of clinical service, Dr. Chris Weaver completed his final scheduled shift in the Methodist ED on July 17. He started with IUEM in 2000 and has since made an enduring impact as a clinician, educator, and leader. While Chris is stepping away from clinical practice, he is not retiring; he will continue to serve as senior vice president and chief clinical officer for IUH, where he provides strategic leadership across quality, pharmacy, supply chain clinical decisions, integrated care management, transfer center, clinical ethics, and the work of the chief medical officers. Although we will miss seeing Chris in the ED, we are grateful that his vision, expertise, and leadership will continue to shape patient care across the IUH system.

Dr. Peter Healy, assistant professor of clinical emergency medicine, celebrates 20 years with us this month. Several of his colleagues share their praise for him on this significant anniversary:

“Pete was part of the founding group that assumed care in the EDs at both IU Fishers (formerly Saxony) and Tipton in 2013. He's always been a reliable and unwavering presence in our group, quick to volunteer for projects and offering insightful assessments delivered with a witty sense of humor. He excels clinically and is often praised by patients, families and the nursing staff for his compassionate care, and can be counted on to help cover shifts for his partners in times of need. Pete makes working in our EDs a joy and I'm thankful to have had the opportunity to work with him and call him a friend for these many years. Congratulations, Pete!” - Dr. Robert Collins, IU Tipton ED medical director

“Pete has always been a strong advocate for the department and offers thoughtful insights into how we can make the department more efficient and provide better care. He is always willing to pick up shifts or make trades to help out his colleagues.” - Dr. Kevin Nowak, IU Fishers ED medical director

“Pete is an excellent physician and an exceptional human being. He is always there to help a colleague or lend a sympathetic ear, and he consistently practices outstanding medicine. I feel lucky to get to work with him. I love to change over to him, as he always follows up to let me know how my patients did.” - Dr. Megan Crittendon, vice president and chief medical officer, IU Health North Region

Dr. Julie Welch, Vice Chair of Faculty Affairs and Development, celebrates 25 years with the department this month! Several of her colleagues offer up praise for her:

“On my interview day for an IUEM faculty position, I had the pleasure of getting to meet Julie. Her passion for physician well-being and dedication to help junior faculty find their niche and thrive is a big part of why I chose to join IUEM. Julie is a fantastic mentor and advocate, and we are fortunate to have her at IU.” - Dr. Destiny Folk, Assistant Professor of Clinical Emergency Medicine and Chisholm Rodgers Scholar

“Julie Welch is a skillful and caring physician, a pioneering leader, a selfless mentor, and a wonderful friend. She has been instrumental in my own career journey, and I know so many others can say the same! Julie has changed the face of medicine by positively influencing countless residents, fellows, and colleagues. She stands up for what she believes in and is a role model to all women! Thank you, Julie!” - Dr. Heather Kelker, Assistant Professor of Clinical Emergency Medicine and Pediatrics

"Julie single-handedly increases the engagement and retention of women faculty in our department. It is hard work to advocate constantly on behalf of others, but it's just another day in the office for Julie. I'm grateful to benefit from her mentorship and leadership." - Dr. Diane Kuhn, Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine

"Julie’s impact on Emergency Medicine at IU is truly immeasurable. She has been a steady, trusted presence whose leadership, institutional knowledge, and commitment to both people and program excellence have shaped generations of learners and faculty alike. Beyond her many formal contributions, what stands out most is the way she shows up - thoughtful, grounded, and deeply invested in the success and well-being of those around her. Our department is stronger because of Julie, and so many of us are better because we’ve had the chance to work with her. She's also been a true north star for women in Emergency Medicine.

On a personal level, I would not have the career or trajectory I do today without Julie’s guidance and mentorship. She believed in me before I fully believed in myself, and she has always been someone in my corner - encouraging, steady, and unwavering in her support. She embodies a culture of appreciation, belonging, and longevity in a field that can often feel unsustainable, and so many of us are better because of her. I feel incredibly lucky to exist in her sphere of influence - both as a person and as a physician." - Dr. Kyra Reed, Assistant Professor of Clinical Emergency Medicine and Pediatrics, S.T.A.R. Program Founder and Chair

When you see Julie next, be sure to congratulate her on this milestone!

Dr. Chris Strachan, CMO of the IUH Adult Academic Health Center (AAHC), celebrates 25 years with the department this month! Here are just a few of the things his colleagues have to say about him:

"Chris and I have worked together in leadership for most of our collective careers, and I have always appreciated how he leads with humor, transparency, and direct communication. He has a way of making complex or challenging situations feel manageable, while still being clear and grounded in what needs to be done.

He has also been incredibly supportive of me along the way. Chris has consistently believed in me and taken the time to offer guidance when I needed it. That combination of trust, mentorship, and approachability has made a real difference in my own growth as a leader.

It has truly been a privilege to work alongside him, and this milestone is well deserved." - Dr. Megan Crittendon, Vice President and CMO, IUH North Region

"During his 25 years with IU Emergency Medicine, Chris Strachan has defined what it means to lead through service. Grounded in a steadfast commitment to patients and the people who care for them, Chris has dedicated his career to improving processes, strengthening operations, and fostering collaboration to make our system and department better and more effective. Across a succession of leadership roles — from EMTC Assistant Medical Director to Vice Chair for Clinical Operations, and now as CMO of the AAHC — he has consistently brought vision, integrity, and follow-through.

Chris is a leader who does what he says he will do, who is unafraid to challenge the status quo when it serves a greater purpose, and who remains calm, steady, and approachable even in the most chaotic moments. Nowhere was this more evident than during COVID-19, when his leadership of incident command became the glue that held our 11 emergency departments together. He embodied the guiding principle “The only way out is through, and the only way through is together.”

Beyond his many accomplishments, Chris is a trusted colleague, a steady presence, and a true friend to many. I count myself fortunate to be among them. Congratulations to Chris on reaching this impressive milestone!" - Dr. Megan Palmer, Senior Advisor and Professor of Emergency Medicine, Senior Associate Dean of Faculty Affairs and Professional Development

"It's hard to put in words to describe the integrity, strength of character and leadership of Chris Strachan. He does what is right. He lives a life in service to others. He's one whose leadership I have learned much from and strongly recommend as a guide to others. Thank you, Chris for your leadership in emergency medicine, to the school and the health system, and for your friendship." - Dr. Peter Pang, former chair of EM, President of Academic Medicine, IUH Medical Group

This 4th of July was the United States' 250th birthday, and many people spent it celebrating and enjoying time with friends and family. But not only are EDs open and needed 24/7/365, on a day like Independence Day they're all the more important. Dr. Mark Liao and everyone in the Methodist ED took a moment to take this photo of everyone working on their July 4th. Thank you all for all of your hard work on all days - especially including weekends and holidays!

I view Indiana University’s Department of Emergency Medicine as one of the elite programs in the country and it was an absolute privilege to train there in the 1990s. You have so many phenomenal alumni graduates who are also deserving of this award, many who I consider my friends. I wish I could be on site today and see you all in person to receive the award.
