🏈 FOOTBALL INJURY WEEK: DAY 2
WAS THAT A BURNER OR STINGER?
A burner or stinger may occur when nerves between the neck and shoulder are stretched or compressed during contact.
The sensation is often described as a sudden burning, stinging, or electric feeling traveling from the shoulder into the arm.
Symptoms may include:
✅ Burning or stinging down one arm
✅ Arm numbness or tingling
✅ Temporary weakness
✅ Neck or shoulder discomfort
✅ An arm that feels “dead” or heavy
Even when symptoms disappear quickly, the player should report what happened and be evaluated before returning to contact.
Recurring symptoms, symptoms affecting both arms, persistent weakness, significant neck pain, difficulty walking, or symptoms involving the legs require prompt medical assessment.
Returning to play should be based on an appropriate examination—not simply because the discomfort faded.
