Are you looking for tips on eating as healthy as you can during a Stay-at-Home order? Look at these tips from NeuroPsychiatric Hospital's Registered Clinical Dietitian!

~Wash your hands thoroughly before eating or preparing food.
~Eat as healthy as you are able! Hopefully you had time to stock up on basics, but take account of what you have available and do the best you can. IT IS OK TO NOT BE PERFECT!
~Look on-line for recipes that use the ingredients you have and don’t be afraid to get creative!
~Plan your meals ahead!
~Your body needs nourishment – try to incorporate whole foods in each meal.
~Make sure you are handling food safely.
~Thaw your meat in the fridge.
~Wash your fruit and veggies.
~Check expiration date on cans and look for dents, avoid if can is expired, bulging, or dented.
~Make sure bags of frozen veggies are not ripped.
~Try to stick to your normal meal times.
~Limit alcohol and sugary drinks.
~Have a plan to counter boredom and stress eating/snacking. Drink a big glass of water when you feel like snacking and wait to see if that curbs your hunger.
~Keeping active may help curb snacking.
 Dance silly (nobody is going to watch you!)
 Do yoga
 Look on you-tube for an at-home workout

When it seems to like life is changing by the hour, it can feel overwhelming.

Try to focus on what you can control! Wash your hands, call a friend, journal your thoughts, eat good nutritious food, drink water, stretch, get good sleep, exercise....

What else can you control?

Each year 2.5 million people experience a traumatic brain injury, with about 80,000 of these people becoming permanently disabled, reports the Brain Trauma Foundation.

Did you know that Animal-assisted therapy can foster social competence in patients with brain injuries and increase their emotional involvement during therapy? These were the findings of a clinical trial conducted by psychologists from the University of Basel and published in the journal Scientific Reports in April, 2019!

Hula the Therapy Dog shares the generous donation of 2 local families to aid in the comfort and mental well being of the patients at NeuroBehavioral Hospital in Crown Point, Indiana. These families wished to help patients feel love and comfort when Hula the Therapy Dog is not at the hospital!

"Stuffed animals provide comfort for those in need. These stuffed objects are not just objects to people who need to comfort and love. They are more. These animals allow our patients to cope with difficult situations. To hold something dear to their hearts, knowing the animal will be with them through the process of good and bad times. Sometimes, we see patients name their stuff animal, talk to their stuff animal, and carry their animal to group functions. We believe they do this as a comfort to cope to fearful situations."

Thank you for your kind and generous donation!

Bell's Palsy is a variation of paralysis affecting the side of one's face. The facial muscles lose their ability to be controlled, resulting in changes in everything from ear pain, sound sensitivity and even a change in taste. While the cause remains unknown, commonly known risks include diabetes and a recent infection in the upper respiratory tract. Normally the condition recovers itself, but some steroids and antiviral medicines have been known to benefit.

A traumatic event can not only be scary, but the experience can also mentally or emotionally scar someone for life. Sometimes they can be the result of a natural disaster, such as an earthquake or tsunami, other times they are man-made, like a devastating automobile accident. While everyone copes in their own ways, some potential indications of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can include feelings of anxiety, anger or sadness, difficulty in sleeping or concentrating on tasks, and obsessing over the incident. An inability to disengage from the events of the incident can be indicative of a larger psychological impact.
