Burns Family Wellness Care

Burns Family Wellness Care Integrative Osteopathic Family Medicine that is rooted in wellness. I am looking at your mind, body, spirit, and social health. Scholastica in Minnesota.
(1)

I received my undergraduate degree from The College of St. I later earned my Masters of Science in biomedical research followed by my medical degree at Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in Missouri. As a doctor of osteopathic medicine (DO), I love incorporating osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM) or osteopathic manipulative therapy (OMT) with a special focus on fascia (a band or sheet

of connective tissue fibers, primarily collagen, which forms beneath the skin to attach, stabilize, enclose and separate muscles and other internal organs), energy/rhythms, and ligaments/tendons. Treatments are sometimes gentle and relaxing or rigorous. Overall, I care about function and believe in the body’s natural ability to heal itself. I am from a tiny town where you know nearly everyone. To this day, as a family physician, I take great pleasure in seeing all generations of families, as well as tribes of friends. This is a beautiful and multifaceted way to know and care for someone. Throughout my medical training, I gravitated towards the functional medicine approach to constantly ask “why”. My parents, who were science teachers, were my earliest examples of this. Later, colleagues, friends, and even you, my patients, have nurtured this approach. In my free time, I enjoy cooking, gardening, home restoration, traveling, painting, photography, team sports, reading, and especially organizing. I have happy adult children who make the world better (fact!). So my favorite travels are to see or be with them.

Here are 4 non-negotiables I use as an osteopath to keep myself healthy.

1. Exercise every day.

Not because I am chasing perfection, but because the body was built to move. Even 45 minutes to an hour of intentional movement can change the way you feel, think, sleep, and handle stress.

2. Prioritize sleep.

Do I always get as much as I need? No.

But sleep is still the foundation. You cannot keep borrowing energy from tomorrow and expect your body to thank you for it.

3. Eat your veggies.

Yes, I eat mine.

Fiber matters. Variety matters. Your gut, immune system, energy, and overall health are all affected by what you consistently put on your plate.

4. Balance life outside of work.

This one is the hardest for me.

Social, spiritual, physical, and mental health all need attention outside of your job. You are not just what you produce. You are still a person who needs connection, recovery, purpose, and peace.

Health is not built from one perfect habit.

It is built from the things you keep coming back to.

PRP treatment is not magic.

But it is a way to help your body use more of what it already has.

1. What is it?

PRP stands for platelet-rich plasma. We draw a small amount of your blood, process it to concentrate the platelets, then inject it into the area we are trying to support.

The goal is simple: bring more of your body’s natural repair signals to the place that needs attention.

2. How does it help?

PRP may help support healing in irritated, injured, or stubborn tissues that have not responded the way we want them to.

Think joints, tendons, ligaments, soft tissue irritation, or areas where your body keeps trying to heal but cannot quite finish the job.

It is not about covering up pain so you can keep abusing the same pattern.

It is about supporting the healing environment.

3. Why should you try it?

Because if you have been dealing with nagging pain, recurring inflammation, or an injury that keeps coming back, “just resting it” may not be enough.

PRP is not for everyone, and it should never be treated like a casual injection.

But for the right patient, with the right evaluation, it can be a powerful option.

Your body was built to heal.

Sometimes it just needs the right support.

Visit burns.care to book a consultation and see if PRP treatment is right for you.

Garbage foods create garbage results.

Here are two big grievances with food right now.

1. Processed Fats
Fried foods, packaged snacks, greasy takeout, and ultra-processed oils are everywhere. They're convenient but your body wasn't built to run on fake fuel. When an ingredient label needs to be scaled to size 3 font to fit all the ingredients, chances are you shouldn't be buying the product. These processed foods are throwing your core functions out of sync with your brain & body, leaving you feeling disconnected from yourself.

2. Dyed foods.
Don't even get me started on dyes like red 40. Food was never meant to have more colors than cable TV. If a food needs bright reds, blues, greens, or yellows to exist, chances are you shouldn't be putting them in your body. Real food doesn't need to glow to be good for you. Start questioning what you're putting in your body by reading labels and choosing foods that look the way nature actually made them.

Your body isn't a trash can. Feed it like you care about living in it.

Your gut might be telling on you.

If you’re constantly dealing with low energy, poor sleep, heartburn, stress, or slow recovery after getting sick, it may be time to look at what you’re eating.

Your gut is connected to your brain, hormones, immune system, and even your physical performance, which means the food you put in your body is doing more than just filling you up. Fast food and ultra-processed foods are designed to be convenient, addictive, and easy to overconsume, but your body was built for more than running on cheap fuel.

Start simple this week.

- Cut back on takeout.
- Eliminate fast food where you can.
- Pay attention to what you’re actually putting into your body.

Your body is a machine, and it deserves better than Big Macs and french fries.

If this felt personal, it probably was. Fix the habit, and ask for help if you need it.
