“IN RANGE” DOESN’T ALWAYS TELL THE WHOLE STORY ☀️

Vitamin D deserves more than a quick glance at your laboratory report—but the goal is not to chase the highest possible number.

Vitamin D supports:

Low vitamin D levels are also commonly seen in people with autoimmune thyroid disease. However, low vitamin D does not necessarily cause thyroid disease, and taking high doses has not been proven to prevent hypothyroidism.

That’s where protein matters.

Adequate protein during weight loss can help:

A thyroid evaluation can look beyond TSH—but that does not mean every patient needs every available test.

At Citrus Telemedicine, laboratory testing is selected based on your symptoms, medical history, examination and previous results.

Depending on the clinical situation, an evaluation may include:

🦋 THYROID FUNCTION AND AUTOIMMUNITY

• TSH
• Free T4
• Free T3
• Thyroid antibodies
• Reverse T3 in limited, selected situations

TSH is commonly the starting point, and free T4 helps evaluate circulating thyroid hormone. Free T3 and antibody testing may provide useful information in certain situations. Reverse T3 has a limited role and is not a routine test for diagnosing hypothyroidism.

• CBC
• Ferritin
• Iron studies
• Vitamin B12

Iron deficiency, anemia and low B12 can cause fatigue, weakness, hair changes and difficulty concentrating—symptoms that may overlap with thyroid disease.

Why do some people with Hashimoto’s or hypothyroidism also have low ferritin or vitamin D?

First, an important correction: thyroid disease does not automatically cause either deficiency—and not everyone with Hashimoto’s needs supplements.

Here are some possible connections:

🩸 LOW FERRITIN

Ferritin reflects your body’s stored iron. Levels may run low because of:

• Heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding
• Low dietary iron
• Digestive conditions that reduce absorption
• Autoimmune overlap, including celiac disease
• Other sources of blood loss

Hashimoto’s is more common in women, and hypothyroidism can be associated with heavy or irregular periods. Hashimoto’s can also coexist with other autoimmune conditions that affect nutrient absorption.

☀️ LOW VITAMIN D

Vitamin D levels are affected by:

• Sun exposure
• Diet and absorption
• Age and skin pigmentation
• Season and geographic location
• Body composition
• Certain digestive or medical conditions

Studies have found an association between lower vitamin D levels and autoimmune thyroid disease, but that does not prove Hashimoto’s directly causes vitamin D deficiency—or that high-dose vitamin D treats hypothyroidism.

😴 WHY SYMPTOMS GET CONFUSING

Hypothyroidism, iron deficiency and low vitamin D can share symptoms such as fatigue, weakness, difficulty concentrating or changes in mood.

Symptoms alone cannot tell you which issue is present. Appropriate laboratory testing may include:

• CBC
• Ferritin and iron studies
• 25-hydroxy vitamin D
• TSH and free T4
• Additional tests selected from your history and symptoms

Do not start high-dose iron or vitamin D based only on symptoms. Too much can be harmful, and iron supplements can interfere with levothyroxine absorption when taken too close together.

CALCIUM 101: WHEN, HOW—AND HOW MUCH? 🦴
Calcium supports your bones, muscles and nerves, but taking more than your body needs does not automatically provide more benefit.

WHEN TO TAKE IT
Check the Supplement Facts label for the amount of “elemental calcium.”

Your body generally absorbs calcium best in amounts of 500 mg or less at one time. If your clinician recommends more, dividing it into separate doses may improve absorption and reduce stomach discomfort.

🍽️ WHAT TO TAKE IT WITH
Calcium carbonate: Take with a meal. Stomach acid produced while eating helps your body absorb it.

Calcium citrate: May be taken with or without food. It may be easier to absorb for people with lower stomach-acid levels.

Vitamin D helps your body absorb calcium, but that does not mean everyone needs an additional vitamin D supplement. Ask a clinician whether you need one.

⏰ WHEN NOT TO TAKE IT
Do not take calcium at the same time as certain medications unless your clinician or pharmacist says it is appropriate.

Calcium can interfere with:
• Levothyroxine and other thyroid medication
• Certain antibiotics
• Some HIV medications
• Iron and other mineral supplements

The amount of separation time depends on the medication.

Speak with a healthcare professional before supplementing if you have kidney disease, a history of kidney stones, high blood-calcium levels or another condition affecting calcium balance.

⚠️ WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU TAKE TOO MUCH?

Your body can only use so much calcium at once. Large supplemental doses may cause constipation, gas, bloating or nausea.

Over time, excessive supplemental calcium may increase the risk of kidney stones in some people. Very high calcium levels can affect the kidneys, muscles and heart—but this is uncommon in otherwise healthy people and is often related to an underlying health condition.

For adults, the upper daily limit from all sources is generally:

• Ages 19–50: 2,500 mg
• Ages 51 and older: 2,000 mg

Remember: food, fortified drinks, supplements and calcium-containing antacids all count toward the total.

An upper limit is a safety ceiling—not a daily goal.
