Colon Cancer Is Increasing in Younger Adults. What Should We Do?

We're seeing a concerning increase in colon cancer among younger adults. In response to this trend, the recommended age to begin routine colon cancer screening for most people has already been lowered from 50 to 45.

But what about people younger than 45?

For most people at average risk, routine screening still begins at 45. But younger adults should know their family history and talk with their physician about their individual risk.

And symptoms matter.

Re**al bleeding, persistent changes in bowel habits, unexplained weight loss, or iron-deficiency anemia should never be dismissed simply because someone is "too young" for colon cancer. Depending on your family history, individual risk, or symptoms, testing or colonoscopy may be appropriate well before age 45.

At Larew Internal Medicine, my bottom line is this: Your age matters—but so do your family history, individual risk factors, and symptoms.

You may wait until 45 for routine screening, but you should never wait until 45 to pay attention to concerning symptoms.

✈️ Travel Medicine Update: Did You Know About the Hepatitis A Vaccine?

Many travelers assume they only need special vaccines for remote destinations. In fact, one of the most important travel vaccines protects against Hepatitis A, a virus spread through contaminated food and water.

If you're traveling to destinations such as Mexico, Central or South America, Africa, Asia, or parts of Europe, a Hepatitis A vaccine may be recommended.

The good news? It's safe, highly effective, and offers long-lasting protection.

Our recommendation is to schedule your travel medicine visit 4–8 weeks before your departure so there's time to review vaccines, medications, and destination-specific health recommendations.

Travel should create lasting memories—not unexpected illnesses.

If you're planning a trip this year, we'd be happy to help you prepare.

🏋️ Healthy Longevity Tip #1: Strength Matters

Many people focus on the number on the scale, but one of the strongest predictors of healthy aging is actually muscle strength.

As we age, we naturally lose muscle mass unless we actively work to maintain it. The good news is that strength training can help improve balance, protect bone health, increase energy, and help maintain independence later in life.

This week, try adding two strength-training sessions to your schedule—even 20 minutes can make a difference.

Remember: Healthy aging isn't about being younger. It's about staying stronger.

We're always looking for ways to make our care more personal-and less screen focused. Dr. Larew has introduced an AI medical dictation system called HEIDI to help capture visit notes more accurately while freeing up more time for REAL conversation.

HEIDI listens securely, converts notes into the medical record, and meets all HIPAA privacy standards. The result?
MORE CONNECTION with YOU, LESS TYPING and dictation.

Just one more way we're advancing our motto:
THOUGHTFUL MEDICINE, PERSONALIZED CARE.
