Kid Captain Harlow Taube is almost ready for her big day at Kinnick Stadium! 💛🖤

The 6-year-old from Orion, Illinois, loves dinosaurs, Michael Jackson videos, and reading about natural disasters. She also hopes to become a paleontologist someday.

For the past six years, Kid Captain Harlow Taube and her family have made the 90-minute trip from Orion, Illinois, to our hospital for her weekly infusions. Along the way, Harlow’s nurses, Child Life specialists, and other members of her care team have become an important part of her life.

“They became and still are our family,” Harlow’s mom, Marley, says.

Today, Harlow looks forward to seeing familiar faces during treatment — including facility dog Nacho. 💛

Innovation in action. 🦴👏

University of Iowa biomedical engineering students created an interactive spine model to help scoliosis patients and families understand how a thoracolumbosacral orthosisbrace brace works. Red means the brace isn’t tight enough, green means it’s secure.

The project was also selected as one of just 18 teams nationwide for a national biomedical engineering competition.

At just 2 weeks old, Harlow Taube’s newborn screening came back positive for a rare inherited disorder that can cause serious health problems without treatment.

Harlow began weekly treatment at our hospital when she was just 7 weeks old. Earlier this year, she reached a major milestone: her 300th infusion.

Now 6 and in first grade, Harlow loves dinosaurs, Michael Jackson videos, and learning about natural disasters.

Electric bikes and scooters are a fun way to get around but they can be dangerous if not used correctly. Our experts offer these tips to keep kids safe when riding: ⬇️

🛴 Wear the right helmet. High speed devices may require specialized helmets. Knee and elbow pads can also help prevent serious injury.
🛴 Ride solo. Scooters and bikes are typically one-person vehicles.
🛴 Alert others and show courtesy to pedestrians. Use a bell or horn to alert others that you’re approaching and walk your device through crowded areas.
🛴 Avoid distractions. Music and calls can keep you from hearing what’s going on around you.
