Congratulations to Long-Sheng Song, MD, MS, and his lab on their new publication in PNAS. The study was a collaborative effort, with Ling Yang, PhD, professor in the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology, serving as co-corresponding author and making significant contributions to the work.

The researchers discovered that a protein called JP2 plays an important role in helping brown fat burn calories to generate heat—a process that helps regulate metabolism. Their findings add to our understanding of how the body uses energy and could inform future research on metabolic health.

Clinical Professor of HOBMT Mohammed Milhem, MBBS, helped lead a clinical trial that identified a treatment for uveal melanoma that doubled five-year survival rates. Milhem co-directs UI's Ocular Oncology service with Elaine Binkley, MD, Associate Professor of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences. Their partnership reflects a bigger collaboration between our Hematology-Oncology division and the University of Iowa Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences to provide comprehensive care for people with uveal melanoma.
