Many people have a difficult time apologizing or admitting they are wrong, especially with family members, partners, and co-workers.
Those who don't have difficulty with this realize how easy it is to admit mistakes, acknowledge faulty judgment, and/or apologize for any impact it has on others.
Once you point out your own error or misdeed and acknowledge it, you've conveyed that you are responsible, consider it, open-minded, not bull-headed, and even if the other person is adversarial, you've beat them to the punch line as far as criticizing you, because you already acknowledged the situation.
If you do this with good eye contact and a confident demeanor (not sheepishly or shamefully), you don't come across as weak or stupid, but as responsible, conscientious, and... Because intelligent people hunger for the truth, not the argument victory, you will likely appear more smart than if you stick to your guns on questionable behavior / choices / claims.
