Ending cancer starts with Hope. 💙

For our patients, it means more time with loved ones, more milestones to celebrate and more hope. For our physicians, researchers and care teams, it's a reminder: when cancer shows up, we show up stronger.

For Barbara Andes, the past year brought a stage 4 pancreatic cancer diagnosis and a search for options. Recently, that search led to a breakthrough moment: she became one of the first patients at City of Hope to receive daraxonrasib, an investigational therapy offered through an FDA-authorized Expanded Access Program.

Daraxonrasib is part of a new generation of targeted therapies that could change what's possible for patients with pancreatic cancer. For Barbara, receiving her first dose was more than a milestone. It was the beginning of a new chapter filled with hope for herself and future patients.

Michelle V***a was 49 when she was diagnosed with non-small cell lung cancer after an emergency room visit for an unrelated health concern. She had no symptoms and no known risk factors. Through surgery, a clinical trial and advances in precision medicine, Michelle gained access to treatments that helped change the course of her care.

Her story is a reminder that lung cancer doesn't discriminate. In Orange County, it is the second most commonly diagnosed cancer among adults, even though only 7% of adults smoke. The county also has one of the highest rates of lung cancer in women under 50 in California.

This World Lung Cancer Day, we're sharing Michelle's story to raise awareness that anyone can develop lung cancer and to highlight how research, clinical trials and personalized treatment continue to improve care and create new possibilities for patients.

How does robotic surgery work? One of the most common questions patients ask is whether the robot performs the surgery. The answer is no.

Ahmad Abou Abbass, M.D., F.A.C.S., our director of gastrointestinal robotics, explains how robotic-assisted surgery works and how the technology enhances a surgeon’s ability to perform complex procedures through a minimally invasive approach. By supporting precision and allowing surgeons to make smaller incisions, robotic-assisted surgery may help patients experience benefits such as less pain, shorter hospital stays and faster recovery. While the technology may be advanced, patients can know they have a skilled surgeon directing their care every step of the way.

The images captured during an MRI exam provide physicians with important information to help diagnose cancer, guide expert treatment and support patient care.

As Lead MRI Technologist at City of Hope Orange County, Alvin Pangilinan performs MRI exams, supports fellow technologists and helps provide the detailed imaging physicians rely on to guide patient care.

"Behind every MRI exam is a person and a family facing uncertainty. It's incredibly rewarding to know that the images we produce play a critical role in diagnosis, treatment planning and ongoing care."

Thank you to Alvin and our entire MRI team for the expertise and compassion you bring to every patient, every day.
