Building fine motor skills is better together 🎨🦋 Finding ways to bring activities outside is always a fun way to engage the kiddos. We loved making a butterfly mural to hang in the clinic and it was a great way for our Tumble N' Grow kiddos to work together towards a shared goal!

Happy What to Know Wednesday! Let's learn about oral sensory seeking...

Does your child constantly chew on shirts, pencils, toys, or even fingers? Do they seem to crave crunchy, chewy, or strongly flavored foods? These may be signs of oral sensory seeking which is a way some children try to help their bodies feel more regulated and organized.

Children who seek oral sensory input may:
• Chew on non-food items
• Prefer crunchy, chewy, or sour foods
• Mouth toys more than peers
• Bite nails, sleeves, or pencil erasers
• Seek frequent snacks throughout the day

Oral sensory input can actually be calming and organizing for the nervous system. Instead of simply saying “stop chewing,” it can help to provide safe alternatives and supportive strategies.

Some OT-approved ideas:
✔️ Crunchy snacks (pretzels, carrots, apples)
✔️ Thick smoothies through a straw
✔️ "Chewelry" or oral motor tools
✔️ Blowing bubbles or whistles
✔️ Water bottles with straw tops

Remember: sensory seeking is a communication from the nervous system! Helping children meet those sensory needs safely can support attention, regulation, and participation throughout the day.

It's What to Know Wednesday! Let's talk about incorporating regulating behaviors through a child’s routine...

Many children benefit from opportunities throughout the day to move, reset, and regulate their nervous system, especially during transitions, busy routines, or moments of overwhelm.

Rather than waiting until a child is already dysregulated, try building calming or organizing sensory activities into the day proactively!

Here are some common times regulating activities can be especially helpful:

🛝Before school...
Movement can help wake up the body and improve attention for the day ahead.Try:
• jumping
• obstacle courses
• animal walks
• swinging
• carrying a backpack or helping with chores

🎶After school...
Many children are holding it together all day long and may need time to decompress after school.Try:
• outdoor play
• climbing
• deep pressure squeezes
• quiet sensory corners
• snacks with crunchy or chewy textures
• calming music or dim lighting

✏️Before homework or seated tasks...
Sensory input can help improve focus and body awareness. Try:
• wall push-ups
• chair push-ups
• resistance bands
• movement breaks
• wiggle cushions or alternative seating

🛁 Before bedtime...
Calming sensory input can support transitions to sleep.Try:
• warm baths
• lotion massage
• rocking or gentle swinging
• cozy blankets
• low lighting and reduced noise

Remember sensory regulation is not about “fixing behaviors.” It’s about helping children feel supported, organized, and successful in their environments.

Every child’s nervous system is different and finding what helps your child feel calm, alert, and regulated may take some trial and error, and that’s okay!

Our Social Explorers are practicing their dragon breathing to help calm their bodies when they are feeling mad! We discussed that while anger is not a “bad” feeling, it can sometimes feel uncomfortable, and there are ways we can help our bodies return to a calm, regulated state. To reinforce this idea, our Explorers made their very own dragon regulation tools to help visualize this concept 🔥🐲

Happy What to Know Wednesday! Let's learn about toe walking...

Ever notice your child walking up on their toes?
Toe walking can be a normal part of development for toddlers learning to walk, but when it continues beyond the early years, it can sometimes be connected to things like sensory processing, muscle tightness, balance, body awareness, or motor planning skills.

Some children toe walk because they like the extra sensory input and pressure it gives their bodies, while others may do it out of habit or because of differences in strength and coordination.

A few things parents can look for:
• Is your child toe walking all the time or only sometimes?
• Can they walk flat-footed when reminded?
• Do they seem extra sensitive to textures, movement, or sound?
• Are there frequent falls, balance challenges, or tight calf muscles?

The good news? Occupational therapy can help support the “why” behind toe walking through play-based activities that target sensory processing, strength, coordination, and body awareness.

And remember: not all toe walking means something is wrong, but if you’re curious or concerned, it’s always okay to ask questions and seek support early!
