Before his procedure, Michael was asked two questions: What's your favorite color? What music do you like?

The room was lit in his favorite color. He asked for 70s and 80s rock, and the first song that came on was "Billie Jean," his favorite pop song of all time.

He’s lived with astigmatism since childhood and cycled through glasses and contacts for as long as he can remember. When he finally decided to correct his vision, he wanted a practice where he felt comfortable.

By 2050, about half of the world's population is projected to be nearsighted.

Dr. Taj Nasser breaks down a 2016 study published in Ophthalmology. It projects that more than four billion people will have myopia by 2050. Over 900 million of them are expected to have high myopia, defined as more than 5 diopters of nearsightedness.

High myopia affects more than day-to-day vision. It is also linked to a higher risk of conditions like retinal detachment and myopic maculopathy. That's why Dr. Nasser believes ophthalmologists need to give uncorrected refractive error the same attention as cataract surgery and other eye conditions.

Over 40 and told you’re not a good candidate for LASIK? That doesn’t have to be the end of the conversation.

Refractive lens exchange (RLE) is a vision correction procedure designed for people in their 40s, 50s, and beyond, especially those relying on readers or noticing early cataract changes. Instead of reshaping the cornea, RLE replaces your eye’s natural lens with an advanced artificial lens that can correct vision at distance and up close.

It’s the same type of procedure used in cataract surgery, done earlier, which means a cataract won’t develop later. For many patients, it’s a lasting path to clearer vision with less dependence on glasses and readers.

At three years old, he injured his eye with a tool from his father’s garage. Emergency surgery saved the eye, but his doctors told him a cataract would likely follow, probably about 40 years later.

They were right. As his vision grew cloudy, he came to Tylock Nasser Vision for cataract surgery. Today he reports 20/20 vision.

His advice to anyone waiting: don’t put it off. Cataracts only get worse with time.

What does success look like five to ten years from now?

For Dr. Nasser, it means reaching people who have no access to eye care: a young adult with severe nearsightedness who can't work the fields, a grandparent living with untreated cataracts, a patient who has lost the simple joys that sight brings. Restoring vision restores independence, and that change reaches families, communities, and economies.

Today, Dr. Taj Nasser becomes the first surgeon in the United States to implant the Rayner Galaxy lens, and he’s doing it for two familiar faces.

Steve Buechele and Mark McLemore both played Major League Baseball, including years in a Texas Rangers uniform, before moving to the broadcast booth to help fans see every pitch and every play. Today, they’re trusting our team with their own vision.

We’re grateful to Steve and Mark for being part of this moment, and proud to bring this new lens technology to North Texas first.
