Medical Moment: Avoiding Sports Injuries.

As a parent or guardian, it can be intimidating to know how to keep a young athlete healthy and active. A lot of kids are now playing the same sport year-round, including multiple sports teams in the same season.

A poorly loaded or poorly worn backpack puts real strain on a growing spine and shoulders.

Choose a backpack sized to your child's body, and load it with only what the day actually requires. Heavier items belong low and close to the back rather than in the bottom or the outer pockets.

Always use both shoulder straps instead of slinging the bag over one shoulder, and adjust the straps so the pack sits close to the body rather than pulling backward. Watch for back, neck, or shoulder pain, or any numbness or tingling in the arms, since those can signal a backpack that does not fit or is carrying too much weight.

The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons has more guidance at https://www.orthoinfo.org/staying-healthy/backpack-safety/.

Hip pain shouldn't keep you from living your life.

If arthritis or joint damage has made everyday activities like walking, climbing stairs, or even sleeping painful, it may be time to discuss your treatment options.

A total hip replacement involves replacing the damaged hip joint with durable, artificial components designed to reduce pain, improve mobility, and help you return to the activities you enjoy. While many patients find relief through conservative treatments such as physical therapy, medications, injections, or regenerative therapies, surgery may be the best solution when those options are no longer effective.

Dr. Bayless takes a comprehensive approach to orthopedic care. As an expert in both surgical and non-surgical treatment options, he works with each patient to determine the most appropriate path based on their condition, lifestyle, and goals.
If hip pain is limiting your quality of life, we're here to help you move forward with confidence.

Chronic knee pain caused by arthritis or injury can make even simple daily activities feel challenging. When non-surgical treatments no longer provide lasting relief, a total knee replacement may be the next step toward restoring function and improving quality of life.

During a total knee replacement, damaged cartilage and bone are replaced with artificial components that recreate the smooth movement of a healthy knee. The goal is to reduce pain, improve stability, and help patients get back to the activities they love.

Dr. Bayless believes surgery is never the first conversation. It is the right conversation when the time is right. As an orthopedic surgeon with expertise in both surgical and non-surgical care, he helps patients understand all of their options, from conservative therapies and regenerative medicine to joint replacement, so they can make informed decisions with confidence.

If knee pain is keeping you on the sidelines, schedule an evaluation to learn which treatment option is right for you.

Tennis rewards the players who prepare their bodies as carefully as their serve. The injuries we see most often in racquet sports tend to build slowly, which means most of them are preventable with a little attention.

Tennis elbow comes from the repeated load of the swing on the tendons of the forearm. Shoulder pain often traces back to the overhead motion of the serve. Knees and ankles take the brunt of the quick stops and direction changes that define the game.

A real warm-up makes a meaningful difference, so give yourself several minutes of light movement, arm circles, and easy practice swings before the first competitive point. Build your strength and your playing time gradually rather than all at once, and treat early soreness as useful information rather than something to push through.
When pain lingers past a couple of weeks or keeps you off the court, please give us a call at (972) 438-4636 so Dr. Bayless and the team can take a look.
