This afternoon, I visited a pediatrician’s office, and was reminded, once again, of just how much families are carrying, and how much more support they need than any one provider can offer alone.
Parents, exhausted, loving, doing everything right, sharing how hard it is when your child’s behavior feels like a mystery. The meltdowns you can’t explain. The milestones that look a little different. The quiet voice inside you that says something is going on… and the fear of what it might mean if you’re right.
I heard the weight of the waiting. The second-guessing. The grief that can come with a diagnosis, even when that diagnosis is also a gift.
April is Autism Awareness and Acceptance Month. And as a behavior analyst, I want to say this directly to every parent carrying that weight right now:
You are not imagining it.
You are not failing your child.
And getting help early, even when it’s hard, even when the answers take time, is one of the most powerful things you can do.
A diagnosis doesn’t change who your child is. It opens doors to the support they deserve.
Swipe through this carousel, and if it speaks to something you’ve been feeling, please share it. Another parent might need to see it today.
You are not alone in this.
