Frontal fibrosing alopecia looks like a thin band of thinning hair that runs along the front and sides of the hairline in women. It comes on slow, and the front hairline with time looks thin, where you can see your scalp whereas you may not have before.
With this you can also have a loss of eyebrows and body hair, it might even be the first signs you notice.

Commonly diagnosed in post menopausal women (though younger women can be affected). It’s one of those conditions where early intervention by a dermatologist is so important.

This condition causes permanent scarring of the hair follicles and treatment slows this process down or helps keep the remaining hair.

✅ Most important: get it diagnosed early, vs. hoping you can treat it yourself.

The American Academy of Dermatology makes some good points in this reel. Keeping the marketing part in mind, the word baby in skin care may not always be the best product for sensitive skin.
Like she says, speak to your board certified dermatologist if you’re confused which products are good for you or your baby. 👶🏼

Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC) is a little less talked about that Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC) and it’s important to know the difference.
Skin cancer grows in different layers of the skin, SCC is more superficial but can grow fast so early treatment is important.

Actinic Keratosis (precancerous skin lesion)is very common and can turn into squamous cell.

If you’re 40 or older it’s good to be aware, do your own skin examination and don’t put off seeking an evaluation from your dermatologist if you see something unusual.

Ever heard of actinic keratosis (AK)? This is usually a dry scaly patch of skin that shows up on sun exposed areas of the body.

Considered a “ pre cancer,” AK’s are incredibly common and can turn into squamous cell skin cancer (SCC).

They can be treated by your dermatologist, usually with cryogen sprayed on the spots to destroy abnormal cells.

They can pop up quickly and usually show up starting in your 40’s depending on sun exposure. Older people can see this more so it’s especially important to do your own self skin check.
Don’t forget to look on the ears or anywhere you’ve had prolonged sun exposure.

While cryogen is the simplest treatment, your dermatologist may recommend more advanced treatments like laser dynamic or photo dynamic therapy for this if you’ve had skin cancer or a lot of sun exposure ( including tanning beds).

We turn to laser dynamic therapy (LDT) for the latter and it’s pretty common in our office. The laser part of the treatment activates a photo sensitive medication and we like to use VBeam for this. It can simultaneously treat redness in the skin so you get a preventative treatment and cosmetic benefit.

Ever heard of collagen banking? It’s a term that started making its way around aesthetics 15 years ago or more.
The idea is by treating your skin earlier in life before collagen depletion is well on its way, you’re maintaining a higher baseline than if you did nothing.

The age as to when to start can be a bit subjective but in your 30’s is a reasonable time for most people.

When you hear “collagen banking” generally we are talking about specific treatments like Ultherapy or microneedling that are known to stimulate collagen. Laser and even peels can also do this or anything treatment wise that creates a micro injury.

In our clinic we have seen how patients who have used treatment like Ultherapy, or Fraxel have maintained much healthier collagen and skin firmness over years of being treated. This along with skincare AND sunscreen can really change the way your skin ages in a positive way.

Some great tips using Minoxidil. While it’s a solid treatment for some types of hair loss, as it’s suggested in the video: not all hair loss is the same, and the best way to treat it is to get a diagnosis from a. Board certified dermatologist.
We see patients consistently for hair loss, both men and women. Including younger female patients. Hair loss can affect anyone.

Biotin has been a popular supplement for hair loss and thought to help. Reality is, it might be help if you have an actual Biotin deficiency.
Otherwise, it’s not helping much. Hair loss often stem’s from internal reason and the best way to identify the why is to seek care from your dermatologist.

August is Hair Loss Awareness Month. Dermatologists see a respectable number of patients concerned about hair loss and
It’s not just men.
Often women who are rightfully concerned they can see more scalp, or hair in a brush or shower.
One common thread is waiting too long before seeking help. Some types of hair loss have a window of time for optimal treatment. Usually this is because patients try things like biotin, shampoos, or other supplements first and over a long period of time before giving up and going to a dermatologist.

There are different causes of hair loss, but genetics, hormone’s, aging, and severe stress are some common reason.
Optimal treatment depends on the type of hair loss and how long it’s been going on.

See your dermatologist if you think you might be experiencing this so they can diagnose the type of hair loss and treatment.

We were just saying “how can it be August already,” and here we are.

August is one of those busy months, last vacations, and back to school preparations. We try and craft specials with this in mind.
