May is Mental Health Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness about the importance of mental health. It's also important to note that individuals with autism often have co-morbid diagnoses like anxiety, ODD, and ADHD. This highlights the need for comprehensive support and understanding. 🧠

Check out the latest blog post about ODD and PDA by one of our BCBAs, Lindsay Brown...

Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) often present with comorbid disorders; some in the physical realm, such as gastrointestinal issues or hypermobility, and some in the mental realm, such as Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) or complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (cPTSD)...

💙✨ Thank You, Hawks on Mission!

Our Rome clinic was so lucky to welcome this incredible group of students from Shorter University for their annual Hawks on Mission service day — and this marks their 3rd year supporting C.A.B.S.! 🥹🙌

From washing windows (inside and out!) 🪟 to picking up trash around the building 🧹 and even washing our walls, their hard work made such a difference. The clinic is shining thanks to them! ✨

We are so grateful for their time, energy, and willingness to give back to our community. You all truly made an impact! 💛

🌟There’s an important conversation happening in the autism community around forced compliance in ABA therapy—and it matters.🌟

This is the expectation that an individual must follow all instructions, even when they are clearly distressed. While this approach was more common in the past, we now understand the serious risks it can carry. When a person's discomfort is ignored in favor of “getting the task done,” it can lead to long-term impacts such as trauma, increased anxiety, and even PTSD. It may also contribute to masking, where autistic individuals hide their true feelings rather than building meaningful, functional skills.

Forced compliance can prioritize obedience over connection—missing opportunities to build trust, communication, and emotional safety. Some outdated methods even relied on restricting access to preferred items until compliance was achieved, limiting a child’s autonomy and voice.
There is a better way.

Assent-based ABA shifts the focus from compliance to collaboration. It emphasizes respecting a child’s cues, honoring their ability to say “no,” and building skills through trust, motivation, and shared engagement. When children feel safe and heard, they are far more likely to participate, learn, and grow in ways that are meaningful to them.

At its core, ABA should empower—not control. 💙
