Head lice are common among school-age children, but there are still many misconceptions about them.

Myth: Lice mean a child has poor hygiene.
Fact: Lice can affect anyone and are not related to cleanliness. They spread through close head-to-head contact.

Myth: Everything in the house must be thrown away or deeply sanitized.
Fact: Basic cleaning of bedding, hats, brushes, and recently used items is usually enough. Lice do not survive long away from the scalp.

Myth: Children with lice should be excluded from school for long periods.
Fact: Many schools no longer follow strict “no-nit” policies because lice are common and not considered a health hazard.

Treatment options may include over-the-counter lice shampoos, prescription treatments, and careful nit removal. Following directions closely and checking household contacts is important.

Distracted driving is one of the leading causes of crashes among teen drivers. Even looking at a phone for a few seconds can take a driver’s eyes off the road long enough to miss traffic changes, pedestrians, or sudden stops.

According to the CDC, thousands of people are injured or killed each year in crashes involving distracted driving, and teen drivers are at especially high risk because they are still gaining experience behind the wheel.

Distractions can include texting, changing music, eating, using GPS, taking photos, or interacting with passengers. Safe driving starts with creating habits early, including putting phones away before the car starts moving.

Parents also play an important role by modeling safe driving behaviors and having clear conversations about phone use, passengers, and expectations before teens begin driving independently.

Traveling with children can go more smoothly with a little planning ahead.

Packing familiar snacks, refillable water bottles, small activities, books, coloring supplies, or downloaded entertainment can help keep kids comfortable during long trips.

For road trips, schedule regular breaks so children can stretch, move around, and use the restroom. Keeping medications packed in an easy-to-access bag and bringing extras when possible can also help avoid unnecessary stress while traveling.

Car seat safety remains important on every trip. Make sure car seats are installed correctly, harnesses fit snugly, and children are riding in the appropriate seat for their size and age.

Swimmer’s ear and middle ear infections are different conditions, even though both can cause ear pain.

Swimmer’s ear is an infection of the outer ear canal and is often linked to trapped moisture after swimming. Symptoms may include pain when touching the ear, itching, redness, drainage, or discomfort with pulling on the ear.

Middle ear infections happen behind the eardrum and are usually related to viruses, colds, congestion, or pressure buildup.

Symptoms may include fever, ear pain, poor sleep, fussiness, congestion, or temporary hearing changes.

One common misconception is that swimming or getting water in the ears causes middle ear infections.

In reality, water exposure is typically associated with swimmer’s ear, not infections behind the eardrum.

To help prevent swimmer’s ear, dry ears well after swimming, and avoid inserting objects into the ear canal.

If your child has ongoing ear pain, drainage, fever, hearing concerns, or worsening symptoms, contact WellBeing Pediatrics to schedule an appointment.

There are many sunscreen myths that can lead to accidental sunburns and skin damage during the summer months.

Myth: Higher SPF means you only need to apply it once.
Fact: No sunscreen lasts all day. Sunscreen should be reapplied about every 2 hours and after swimming or sweating.

Myth: You cannot get sunburned on cloudy days.
Fact: UV rays still reach the skin through clouds, so sun protection is important even when it is overcast.

Myth: Spray sunscreen works instantly with a quick spray.
Fact: Spray sunscreen should be applied generously and rubbed in evenly to ensure full coverage and reduce missed areas.

Myth: One bad sunburn is no big deal.
Fact: Sunburns during childhood can increase the risk of skin damage and skin cancer later in life.

Vaccine records are commonly needed for school registration, sports, daycare, camps, college, and other activities throughout the year.

Families may be able to request records through the patient portal, by phone, or directly through our office depending on office procedures.

Some forms may require provider review, updated visits, or additional processing time before they are ready for pickup or submission.

Requesting records early before school or activity deadlines can help avoid last-minute stress and delays.

Keeping copies of your child’s vaccine records at home can also be helpful for future needs.

If you need vaccine records, school forms, or immunization documentation, check out our website or send us a portal message today.

As children get older, car safety continues to be extremely important. Many school-age children still need a booster seat to help the seat belt fit correctly and provide proper protection during a crash.

A properly fitted seat belt should rest across the upper thighs—not the stomach—and the shoulder belt should lie across the chest and shoulder, not under the arm or behind the back. Children should also continue riding in the back seat as long as possible, since it is the safest place for kids under 13 years old.

Common mistakes include moving out of a booster seat too early, allowing children to sit in the front seat before they are ready, or using seat belts incorrectly for comfort.

If you are unsure whether your child still needs a booster seat or if the seat belt fits properly, contact WellBeing Pediatrics or schedule a certified car seat safety check for guidance.

Summer picnics and cookouts can be a great opportunity to offer simple, balanced foods that keep kids fueled and hydrated during outdoor activities.

Easy options include grilled chicken, turkey sliders, cheese cubes, yogurt pouches, pasta salad, fresh fruit, watermelon, cut vegetables with dip, and whole grain crackers. Hydration-friendly foods like cucumbers, berries, oranges, and watermelon can also help during hot weather.

When spending time outdoors, remember that food safety matters too. Keep cold foods chilled in a cooler, avoid leaving perishable foods out in the heat for long periods, and encourage frequent water breaks throughout the day.

Reusable water bottles are great for hydration, but they can also collect mold, bacteria, and odors if they are not cleaned regularly. Straws, spouts, lids, and rubber seals are common places where buildup can hide, especially during the hot summer months.

Water bottles should be washed daily with warm soapy water and allowed to dry completely before reuse. Straw cleaners and small brushes can help clean hard-to-reach areas. If bottles are dishwasher safe, regular deep cleaning cycles may also help reduce buildup.

Strong odors, discoloration, visible mold, cracks, or damaged seals may be signs that it is time to replace the bottle.

If your family uses reusable water bottles regularly, now is a great time to check lids, straws, and cleaning routines before heading into another busy summer week.

07/06/2026

Pityriasis alba is a very common and usually harmless skin condition seen in children and teens. It often appears as lighter patches of skin, most commonly on the face, cheeks, arms, or upper body. The areas may look slightly dry or flaky and often become more noticeable during the summer when surrounding skin tans.

The exact cause is not fully understood, but it is commonly associated with dry or sensitive skin and mild eczema. It is not contagious and is not caused by poor hygiene.

Treatment typically focuses on moisturizing the skin and protecting it from sun exposure with sunscreen, since tanning can make the lighter areas stand out more. In some cases, providers may recommend mild medicated creams if irritation is present.

While pityriasis alba is usually harmless, persistent rashes, itching, spreading, or uncertainty about the diagnosis should be evaluated.
