We think love is something that happens to us. Or something we give. Something that finds us if we’re lucky, or something we build if we’re devoted enough. That is a relationship — a container for love. But what lives inside it is different. Less measurable. More alive.
Love is a threshold into a different reality. The price of entry is surrender.
Because to enter love you have to put down control. You have to agree to be changed by it. And most of us won’t do that. We’ll get close. We’ll feel the pull. And then we’ll manage it — stay just guarded enough, just strategic enough, just defended enough to remain who we were before.
That’s not love. That’s negotiation.
Real love requires you to cross a threshold you cannot uncross. To let something in that will reorganize you. Your body. Your sense of what’s possible. Your idea of yourself.
That’s the price. Not the possibility of pain — the certainty of transformation. And transformation means the person you were before cannot survive it unchanged.
Most people aren’t willing to pay that. Not because they’re cold or broken. But because surrender feels like losing. Like weakness. Like handing someone a weapon.
When really it’s the only way in.
