Back-to-School Vaccine Clinic: What Ohio Parents Should Know
As another school year approaches, many families have seen announcements about upcoming school vaccine clinics.
As parents, itβs important to know that you have both the right and the responsibility to make informed healthcare decisions for your children.
Ohio law does require certain immunizations for school attendance. However, Ohio law also recognizes exemptions. Specifically:
β’ Medical exemption β when a physician determines a vaccine is medically contraindicated.
β’ Reason of conscience, including religious convictions β Ohio law allows a parent or guardian to submit a written statement declining immunizations for reasons of conscience, including religious beliefs.
My purpose in sharing this isnβt to tell anyone what decision to make.
Itβs to encourage every parent to make an informed decisionβnot one made because of convenience, pressure, or the assumption that there are no alternatives.
If youβre unsure:
Ask questions.
Read information from multiple perspectives.
Understand both the potential benefits and potential risks of any medical intervention.
Learn what Ohio law actually says before assuming you have only one option.
As healthcare providers, we believe parents should be empowered with accurate information so they can make decisions they believe are best for their own children.
Whatever decision your family makes, it should be one made through informed consentβnot confusion or coercion.
Knowledge leads to confident decisions.
