Worried your family can’t afford care at home? Don’t assume private pay is your only option. 🤍
When a loved one needs help with daily activities, the cost of care can feel overwhelming. But before deciding that support is out of reach, take time to explore what resources may be available.
Here are 5 places to start:
1. Medicaid Home- and Community-Based Services (HCBS)
Depending on your state, income, care needs, and other eligibility requirements, Medicaid programs or waivers may help cover certain in-home support services. Ask your state Medicaid office what programs are available and whether they cover the type of care your loved one needs.
2. Medicare coverage
Medicare generally does not cover ongoing custodial care when that is the only care needed, such as help with bathing, dressing, or other daily activities. However, eligible individuals may qualify for certain home health services under specific conditions. Ask Medicare or your plan what is covered.
3. Long-term care insurance
If your loved one has a long-term care insurance policy, review its benefits, eligibility requirements, waiting periods, and covered services. Don't assume the policy won't help without checking the details.
4. Veterans' benefits
Eligible veterans may qualify for programs that help with certain care-related expenses. Contact the VA or a Veterans Service Officer to learn which benefits may apply.
5. Local aging and community resources
Your local Area Agency on Aging may connect families with caregiver support, respite resources, benefits counseling, and other community programs. Availability varies by location.
One more important step: Write down the help your loved one needs most, such as bathing, meal preparation, companionship, or supervision. Knowing the specific needs can help you ask more informed questions about available services and costs.
Remember, eligibility and coverage vary, and not every program pays for every type of home care. But asking the right questions can help you understand your options before making a decision.
