Ask the Healthcare Professional is a series where Christ Community Health Services providers answer common questions about physical, mental, and spiritual health.
Question: How can we support individuals returning to society after incarceration who are living with mental health disorders?
Answer from Tiara Meacham, Behavioral Health Consultant
Support begins with understanding, patience, and compassion. Educate yourself about their mental health needs, listen without judgment, and remember that the person returning home is not the same person who entered prison.
One of the most important steps is helping them connect with mental health services as soon as possible. Emotional support, assistance with basic needs, and access to medications can help create stability and reduce the risk of setbacks.
If concerns arise, seek help from a therapist, behavioral health professional, or healthcare provider early. Timely support can make a lasting difference.
