Mississippi Department of Mental Health MDMH is supporting a better tomorrow in the lives of Mississippians living with mental illness.

The Mississippi Department of Mental Health (DMH) administers and operates state behavioral health programs and regional programs for persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). The behavioral health programs provide inpatient services for adults and children with serious mental illness and substance use disorders, and the programs for persons with IDD provide residential servi

ces and licensed homes for community living. A variety of community services and supports is also available through DMH operated programs and DMH certified providers, depending on the program/provider and location. Mississippi’s overdose deaths rose sharply, peaked, and have fallen faster than the nation’s, but the burden is not shared evenly across the state. The state’s first comprehensive behavioral health needs assessment, completed in conjunction with the MSU Social Science Research Center and Psychology Department at Mississippi State University, is now available to read on the DMH web site. While drug overdose deaths may be declining, there is much work to be done. We're proud to have 12 officers who recently completed the second Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) Leadership Development Class earlier this month! The class was held at Mississippi Law Enforcement Officers Training Academy on August 5th and 6th. The two-day class is offered to law enforcement officers that supervise CIT patrol officers. Many officers in leadership roles do not have the time available to attend the regular 40-hour CIT training, so the DMH Division of Crisis Response offers a two-day class for them to gain knowledge and understanding of CIT.

Instructors for the class include Kambria Thorne, Marcus Crowley, Layne Goode, Linda Foley, Sam Riley, and Brent Hurley. Guest presenters include Sheriff Ward Calhoun with Lauderdale County SO, Kathleen Seeburg, Executive Director of NAMI, and Auvergne Williams, NAMI Board Member. The course is approved by the Department of Public Safety Office of Standards and Training for 16 hours of CEs.
