During Emergency Preparedness Month, we are thankful for Special Needs Shelters and the teams who help care for some of the most vulnerable members of our community during emergencies. A Special Needs Shelter is different from a general public shelter. It is a refuge for people who have specific medical, physical, cognitive, or support needs that may not be safely met in a General Population Shelter. As hurricane season approaches, this is a good time to determine whether you or a loved one may need this type of support during an evacuation. Registration should be completed before an emergency is approaching. Planning ahead helps families, caregivers, and emergency teams respond more safely and effectively when it matters most. Thank you to the emergency management teams, public health workers, shelter staff, volunteers, caregivers, and community partners who help protect vulnerable neighbors during emergencies.
