Hemorrhoids are swollen and inflamed veins in the re**um and a**s that cause discomfort, bleeding, and are usually caused from straining during bowel movements, obesity, or pregnancy. Discomfort or pain is a symptom, especially during a bowel movement or when sitting for extended periods of time. Additional symptoms may include itching and bleeding. Colore**al cancer happens when cancer cells form in the tissues of the colon or the re**um, 2 parts of the body’s digestive system. These cancers can also be called colon cancers or re**al cancers, depending upon where they start. Colore**al cancer includes both colon and re**al cancer because they share many features. Colore**al cancer usually starts as a growth on the inside of the colon or the re**um. These growths are known as polyps. Over time, some of these polyps can turn into cancer. The risk of colore**al cancer increases after age 50. Most cases of colore**al cancer are diagnosed after age 50. Having a parent, brother, sister, or child with colore**al cancer doubles a person’s risk of colore**al cancer. African Americans have an increased risk of colore**al cancer and death from the disease compared to other races.
