Understanding Runner's Knee

Pain around the front of the knee is one of the most common complaints among runners, but the knee isn't always the source of the problem.

Runner's knee often develops when training demands outpace what your body is prepared for. A few things that can contribute:

• Weakness through the hips
• Reduced control during single-leg movements
• Sudden changes in training volume
• Limited mobility

Rest may settle the symptoms, but it doesn't always address why they started. Understanding what's contributing to the irritation, improving movement quality, and building strength can help you return to running and better tolerate the demands of training.

Stay Ready This Season

Fall sports are here, and every practice adds up.

Early-season injuries often happen when athletes increase training volume faster than their bodies can adapt. Muscle strains, ankle sprains, knee pain, and overuse injuries are common, but many can be reduced with proper strength, recovery, and movement preparation.

Training isn't just about improving performance. It's also about building resilience so you can stay on the field all season long. Learn more here: https://atlasphysicaltherapy.com/physical-therapy-services/sports-injuries/?utm_source=pes_custom&utm_medium=social

If the same muscle strain keeps coming back, don't just treat the latest episode.

Recurring injuries often point to an underlying issue that never fully resolved. That could be strength, mobility, training habits, recovery, or even how you're moving during activity.

When you address the reason an injury keeps happening—not just the symptoms—you give your body a better opportunity to stay healthy and keep doing what you enjoy.

One strain can be bad luck. The same strain over and over is worth a closer look.

A rotator cuff injury doesn't always mean you need to stop using your shoulder. In many cases, the shoulder responds better to the right amount of movement than complete rest.

Recovery often involves gradually rebuilding strength, improving mobility, and restoring the shoulder's ability to handle everyday activities and exercise.

The shoulder adapts to what it's consistently exposed to. Appropriate movement, progressive strengthening, and time help restore strength, improve function, and prepare the shoulder for the demands of daily life and activity.

Knee pain doesn't always start at the knee.

The hips play an important role in controlling how your leg moves when you walk, run, squat, or climb stairs. If they're not moving well or producing enough strength, the knee often has to absorb more stress than it should.

That doesn't mean every case of knee pain comes from the hip, but it's one of the first places worth looking. Treating where it hurts is important. Understanding why it hurts is what often leads to lasting improvement.

Yesterday, our Director of Clinical Excellence, De, had the opportunity to present to the team at Nemours on one of our favorite topics: bridging the gap between rehabilitation and a confident, data-driven return to sport.

Pain free is not the finish line. Objective testing, meaningful outcome measures, and clear return to sport criteria get athletes back stronger and safer, and that starts with everyone in the room speaking the same language.

We set a high bar. We are grateful for partners willing to meet us there.

Squats don't have to hurt. If they do, it doesn't automatically mean you should stop doing them.

Sometimes the issue isn't strength—it's how you're moving. Limited ankle or hip mobility, poor control, or compensations elsewhere can all change how your body handles the movement.

Before giving up on squats, take a closer look at how you're performing them. Small changes in movement quality can make a big difference in how they feel.
