Why are more and more therapists, doctors, and healthcare providers refusing to accept insurance?

Here's a real-world example:

A client comes in for therapy. We verify the insurance they provide and bill it. The insurance company pays the claims. Everything appears fine.

Then, TWO YEARS LATER, the insurance company contacts us and says, "Actually, this wasn't the client's primary insurance. There was another insurance policy that should have been billed first. Please pay us back over $3,000."

Wait...what?

We had no idea there was another insurance policy. The client never told us. When we contacted the client, they acknowledged they had other insurance but didn't realize they needed to let us know.

So now what?

We rebill the correct insurance company. They process the claims and tell us the charges apply to the client's deductible. No payment.

Meanwhile, the insurance company that already paid us says, "That's unfortunate, but you still owe us the money because the coordination of benefits wasn't updated in a timely manner."

And here's the part most people don't realize: the insurance company doesn't pause collection efforts while the appeals are being reviewed. Even though we're actively disputing the claim, submitting documentation, and waiting for decisions, they simply start withholding payments from completely unrelated current sessions until they recover the money they say is owed.

So let's recap:

✅ We provided the services.
✅ We billed the insurance information we were given.
✅ We had no knowledge of the other insurance.
✅ We spent countless hours on phone calls, appeals, resubmissions, and documentation.
✅ The insurance companies made their determinations.

And after all that, the provider is still expected to absorb the loss.

Providers often have only 90-180 days to submit claims. Miss that deadline and the claim may be denied forever.

Insurance companies, however, can come back YEARS later and demand repayment.

This is one of the many reasons healthcare providers are becoming increasingly reluctant to participate with insurance panels. It's not because providers don't want to help people. It's because the rules are often stacked in a way that creates enormous administrative burdens and financial risks for the very people providing the care.

The next time you hear that a provider is private pay only, remember: there is often a long story behind that decision.

We are starting a support group for parents; message us to learn more and join.

There is a growing cultural trend that nobody wants to talk about: adult children cutting off their parents, not because of severe abuse, violence, or genuine danger — but because parents were imperfect human beings.

Somehow, normal parental mistakes, disagreements, generational differences, divorce, boundaries, discipline, or simply not meeting every emotional expectation have been rewritten into “toxicity” and “trauma.” Entire childhoods are being reinterpreted through social media soundbites, influencer psychology, and one-sided narratives that leave no room for accountability, context, forgiveness, or nuance.

No parent gets everything right. None. Parenting is messy, emotional, exhausting, sacrificial, and deeply human. Yet many loving parents are now finding themselves abruptly erased from their children’s lives over perceived slights, revisionist history, or therapeutic language that labels every hurt feeling as abuse.

And the truth is, the devastation left behind is very real.

WARNING! Once you discard your mom, it may never be the same. If you think you can lift the ban and continue as though it didn't happen? Think again. Reconciled parents quickly learn how terrifying it is to walk on your eggshells, and because few kids give specific reasons for doing this, we have to pick ourselves apart and guess.

The trauma is intense, your cruelty is brutal and you can't really uncrush a discarded parent. Congratulations. You effectively trashed the 20 years of effort she put into you and will probably have a hard time ever trusting you with her heart again. If she's anything like me, she can't see her way out of this.

You listened to young mental health professionals or award-winning authors telling you to just p**f be done with us. That you will be better off. So it's all a pile of ashes now, able to be stirred but never restored. Moms have no choice. The more we loved you, the harder it is to recover. You used that against us. Moms move on.

I came across this post and thought WOW! Whoever wrote this did an excellent job!

As a therapist, I am seeing this and hearing about it more and more.

I know Estranged Adult Children are real proud of themselves these days for cutting their parents off and calling it "growth", but some of this s**t is not growth.

It is straight-up cruelty with a trendy label on it.

You mean to tell me you can know your mother is crying, your father is sitting there getting older, both of them wondering if they are going to die before they ever hear from you again, and you still feel good about yourself?

You still think you are the evolved one?
RIGHT
Please.

That is not "healing." That is a cold soul getting off on punishment.
Yes, I said it exactly like that.

Most of these adult kids did not come from horror-movie homes.
They came from regular, imperfect, messy families like the rest of us. Their HUMAN parents made mistakes.

Their parents probably said things wrong, handled things wrong, and have regrets just like every other parent walking this earth.
But now suddenly the punishment for being a human parent is permanent exile.

Get out of here with that s**t!

Some of these people act like if they can slap the word "boundary" on it, nobody is allowed to notice how nasty they are being.
Sorry, but I notice.

Keeping grandchildren away.

Ignoring your parents while they AGE.

Letting holidays, birthdays, illnesses, and years go by like they are already dead.

Watching them sit in grief and calling that “protecting your peace.”
That is dark and ugly. That is mean as hell.

What really gets me is the smugness of it. The moral superiority. The fake wisdom. The way some of them act like they should be applauded for being emotionally brutal.

They become heroes in the story because they figured out how to use therapy words while they blowtorch their family.
None of this is brave. It's just being heartless and wanting everybody to clap for it.

You do not get to leave your parents brokenhearted in the last years of their lives, then act shocked when people call that what it is.

There is a level of disrespect in that I cannot even wrap my mind around.

It takes a hard, ugly piece of you to be able to do that and sleep just fine at night.

Time is moving and parents are aging.
One day that parent is going to be gone for real.
Then what?

Then all that big talk about boundaries and peace and healing is going to hit a little different when there is a casket involved and no chance left to fix a damn thing.

MOST estranged parents are not dangerous or monsters.
They are hurt and confused. They are getting older. And they are being treated like they are disposable.

That is vile.

I do not care how many people try to dress it up this s**t up, sanitize it, or call it self-care.

A grown adult leaving their parents to sit in loneliness, grief, and unanswered questions for years, when there was room for a conversation and room for some humanity, is not some enlightened choice.

It is vicious and arrogant. And for some of them, it is going to come back to haunt them when it is too damn late.

A hard heart is still a hard heart, even when you dress it up in therapy words.

Therapists off the clock!

We took some time for fun and downtime this week and hit a local bowling spot here in town. Nothing better than laughs, strikes (and gutter balls 😅), and spending time together outside the office.

Session notes:
Location: Bowling alley
Intervention: Laughter Treatment plan:
Team downtime
Outcome: Much needed.

Even therapists need to recharge sometimes and taking care of ourselves helps us show up better for the people who count on us every day.
