One of the most challenging dynamics in relationships is when a partner struggles with self-awareness or self-worth. It’s easy to fall into the trap of wanting to “fix” them or point out what they don’t see. But as Harville Hendrix and Helen LaKelly Hunt remind us in Getting the Love You Want (2019), relationships are mirrors. Through the lens of Imago theory, our partners often reflect not only the qualities we admire but also the wounds and unmet needs that we ourselves carry.
When someone struggles to see their value, the most effective response isn’t correction—it’s connection. Imago dialogue teaches us to approach with empathy, curiosity, and acceptance. Instead of saying, “You need to change,” we can ask, “How does this feel for you?” or “What do you need most right now?” These small shifts invite reflection rather than resistance.
The truth is... You can’t force someone to see themselves clearly. But you can create a compassionate space that helps them feel safe enough to look in the mirror. Over time, that safety becomes the foundation for awareness, growth, and healing.

People who choose to love us deserve to know us completely. A middle-aged man adores his only daughter, who is married with two young children. He is supportive of his daughter’s family,
caring for his grandchildren, and maintaining his daughter’s second home in a nearby southern town.

This gentleman hesitated to tell his daughter of his plans to reunite with wife #2 (not her mother). His daughter responded angrily, expressing disapproval of his stated plan. She believes that her biological parents (both of whom are remarried, her mother has a pr***en born to her current marriage) should be the only grandparents allowed to visit or interact with her children, and family.

It seems clear to me, that this young woman has an issue with boundaries. It is our responsibility to set firm boundaries to preserve our well-being. Our property lines need to be clearly visible to others. It is the only way to maintain peace and productivity in our lives. Take care of your overall wellness, make choices for your enjoyment, It’s within your power, LIVE!!!!!!!!!!!

Healthy romantic relationships are built on foundations of self-awareness, boundaries, and responsibility. There is a need to be honest with self about our needs, desires, strengths, weaknesses, fears, and other unresolved issues prior to seeking love relationships. It’s our responsibility to meet our own personal needs. Make sure that your love interest does this work as well. Take a happy, fulfilled self to a relationship, create the relationship you desire, and live!
