RECOGNIZING EMOTIONAL DISTRESS BEGINS WITH CHECKING IN

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, emotional distress does not always look like sadness. It may show up as withdrawal, irritability, significant changes in sleep or appetite, increased substance use, loss of interest in familiar activities, or a noticeable shift in the way someone communicates.

What matters most is knowing the people in our lives well enough to notice when something has changed.

If a friend, family member, coworker, or loved one seems different from their usual self, simply reaching out can make a huge difference. Acknowledging that you have noticed a change, that you care, and that you are available to listen can help make it easier to seek additional help.

If you or someone you know is struggling or in crisis, call or text 988 to reach the 988 Su***de & Crisis Lifeline. In an immediate emergency, call 911.

WHEN SCHOOL STARTS, PAY ATTENTION TO WHAT CHANGES

Did You Know?

A new school year can bring excitement, but it can also bring academic pressure, changing friendships, new social expectations, and disruptions to familiar routines. For parents and caregivers, one of the most important things you can do is stay curious about how your child is really doing.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration identifies warning signs in young people that can include expressing hopelessness about the future, overwhelming emotional pain or distress, negative self-talk, or marked changes in behavior.

Pay attention to meaningful changes in sleep, mood, behavior, friendships, or interest in activities they usually enjoy. Create opportunities for conversation that feel safe rather than rushed or judgmental. A trusted adult who listens, remains calm, and takes a child's feelings seriously can become an important part of their support system.

If you or someone you know is struggling or in crisis, call or text 988 to reach the 988 Su***de & Crisis Lifeline. In an immediate emergency, call 911.

SUPPORT STARTS WITH AWARENESS

September is National Su***de Prevention Month, a time to remind ourselves that meaningful connection can be an important source of strength during difficult moments. When someone is struggling emotionally, the support of a friend, family member, counselor, faith community, or other trusted person can help them feel less alone and more able to take the next step.

Did You Know?

The CDC identifies strong relationships, a sense of belonging, effective coping skills, and access to quality mental health care among important protective factors.

You do not need to have all the answers to be supportive. Sometimes listening, checking in, and making space for an honest conversation can be powerful.

At Dupont Counseling Group, our licensed mental health professionals provide compassionate support for individuals, couples, and families navigating emotional and behavioral health challenges.

If you or someone you know is struggling or in crisis, call or text 988 to reach the 988 Su***de & Crisis Lifeline. In an immediate emergency, call 911.

SMALL STEPS CAN SUPPORT LASTING WELLNESS

As National Wellness Month comes to a close, it is worth remembering that caring for your mental and emotional health is not limited to one month or one perfect routine.

Progress does not need to happen all at once. Wellness may look like setting a boundary, making time to rest, having an honest conversation, asking for help, or taking the first step toward addressing anxiety, depression, grief, relationship challenges, or substance use. Small, consistent choices combined with the right support can help build greater stability, connection, and well-being over time.

At Dupont Counseling Group, we provide accessible, compassionate, and confidential mental health care for children, individual adults, partners, and families.

SOMETIMES THE BEST SUPPORT COMES WITH FOUR PAWS

Today on National Dog Day, we celebrate our in-house therapy dog, Obi! He offers a gentle, reassuring presence when appropriate. Alongside our trained counselors, he can help create a welcoming environment where children feel more at ease expressing themselves and building healthy coping skills.

Did You Know?

For some children, talking about worries, sadness, or difficult experiences can feel overwhelming. A therapy dog’s calming presence may help them feel safer and more comfortable during counseling. A 2025 systematic review found promising evidence that animal-assisted therapy may help reduce anxiety in children and adolescents.

WHEN SUBSTANCE USE BECOMES A WAY TO COPE

Stress does not always look like anxiety or sadness. Sometimes it appears as drinking more often, misusing medication, or relying on substances to sleep, relax, or avoid difficult thoughts.

Did You Know?

The 2024 National Survey on Drug Use and Health found that approximately 48.4 million Americans ages 12 and older experienced a substance use disorder during the previous year. With compassionate support, people can better understand what is driving the behavior, recognize harmful patterns, and begin building healthier ways to cope.

Anyone facing these challenges should know they are not alone, and help is available. At Dupont Counseling Group, we provide outpatient substance use counseling for individuals whose mental health and substance use concerns may be closely connected.

BACK-TO-SCHOOL NERVES VS. LASTING ANXIETY

Last week, Nicole Davidson-Harshaw, M.Ed., NCC, LMHC, PMT, Nationally Board Certified Counselor and licensed mental health counselor with the Dupont Counseling Group joined the WJXT4 The Local Station / News4JAX Morning Show. She and news anchor Melanie Lawson discussed how parents can tell the difference between temporary back-to-school nerves vs. long-term anxiety in their kids.

"Stress can turn into anxiety, and those signs are very real. Chief complaints like frequent headaches, stomach aches, chronic insomnia - these are happening but there's no medical explanation for it. A little bit of anxiety is okay. But long-term anxiety, that's when what they're going through is disproportionate to the worry."

WHEN PARENTS ARE STRESSED, EVERY FAMILY MEMBER FEELS IT

The start of a new school year can leave parents managing transportation, homework, extracurricular activities, meal preparation, work responsibilities, and unexpected expenses all at once.

Did You Know?

A 2026 study published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention noted that parents experiencing high levels of stress may have less time, energy, and emotional capacity to support healthy routines for their children.

Parental stress often means one person has been trying to carry too much for too long. Counseling can help parents identify sources of stress, establish healthier boundaries, manage difficult emotions, and respond to family challenges more intentionally.

At Dupont Counseling Group, we provide individual and family counseling to help parents and children adjust to changing routines and strengthen their relationships.

WELLNESS BEGINS WITH SUPPORT

August is National Wellness Month, a time to recognize that wellness involves more than physical health. Emotional well-being, healthy relationships, effective coping skills, and access to support all play an important role in how we manage daily life.

Wellness does not look the same for everyone. It may mean asking for help during a difficult transition, learning to manage anxiety or depression, improving communication with a partner or family member, addressing substance use, or simply creating space to better understand what you are feeling.

At Dupont Counseling Group, we are committed to providing accessible, compassionate, and confidential treatment and care. Our experienced professionals offer counseling for individuals, partners, and families, along with outpatient substance use treatment.

Seeking support is not a sign that you have failed. It can be an important step toward greater stability, connection, and well-being.
