Nobody talks about upper back tension during pregnancy nearly enough. And it is one of the things we hear about most in our office. ๐
As your baby grows and your belly shifts forward, your entire spinal curve changes. Your lower back deepens, your pelvis tips, and your thoracic spine โ your mid and upper back โ rounds forward to compensate for the shift in your center of gravity.
The muscles on either side of your spine are working constantly to hold you upright against a load that is increasing every single week.
Add in ribcage expansion as your body makes room for your growing baby.
Add in a diaphragm that is progressively more compressed from below โ pushing most pregnant women into shallower breathing patterns without them realizing it.
Shallow breathing means less natural rib and thoracic mobility throughout the day. Less mobility means more stiffness, more tension, more of that deep aching fatigue that lives between your shoulder blades.
And then add the weight of a growing chest, the postural demands of feeding and holding a baby if you already have little ones, and the emotional load of growing a human โ and it becomes very clear why your upper back is screaming.
Prenatal chiropractic care addresses all of it. Gentle adjustments restore mobility to a compressed spine, improve rib mechanics, support deeper breathing, and help your nervous system regulate through the rapid physical demands of pregnancy.
Your body is working incredibly hard growing your bundle of joy and it deserves support to match. ๐ค
