September is Su***de Prevention Month, a time to raise awareness, encourage open conversations, and remind those who may be struggling that they are never alone. Mental health challenges can affect anyone, regardless of age, background, or circumstance. Reaching out for support is a sign of strength, not weakness. 💛

This month, we encourage you to check in with the people you care about, listen without judgment, and help create a community where seeking help is welcomed and supported. A simple conversation can remind someone that they are seen, valued, and cared for.

If you or someone you know is struggling, know that help is available and hope is always possible. 🌱🌻💛

Grief is a natural response to loss, but it is not limited to the death of a loved one. People may also grieve the end of a relationship, changes in health, loss of a job, missed opportunities, or major life transitions. Grief can bring a wide range of emotions including sadness, anger, confusion, guilt, or even relief. Every person's experience is unique, and there is no timeline for healing.✨

On National Grief Awareness Day, we honor those carrying the weight of loss and encourage compassion for yourself and others. Healing does not mean forgetting. It means learning how to move forward while honoring what has been lost. If grief begins to feel overwhelming, remember that seeking support from trusted loved ones or a mental health professional can provide comfort and guidance along the journey.🤎

Mental health is an important part of overall wellness, yet many individuals in the Black community continue to face barriers such as stigma, limited access to care, and cultural misconceptions about seeking support. Open conversations about mental health help normalize the importance of emotional well being and encourage individuals to seek help without fear or shame.💬

Healing looks different for everyone, and everyone deserves access to compassionate, culturally responsive care that recognizes their unique experiences. Therapy can provide a safe space to process emotions, develop healthy coping skills, strengthen relationships, and work toward personal growth. Choosing to prioritize your mental health is a courageous step toward healing and wellness.🌿

Would you consider seeing a graduate counseling intern?

You might be surprised by the benefits.

Graduate interns are in an intensive period of professional development. They're learning, studying, receiving feedback, consulting about their clinical work, and intentionally developing their therapeutic skills.

Working with Shayla offers:
🌱 Personalized attention
🌱 Close clinical supervision
🌱 Evidence-informed approaches
🌱 A counselor who is actively learning and developing
🌱 Support from the larger RCSS clinical team
🌱 Affordable access to counseling

And perhaps the biggest benefit for some families:

$30 for a 50-minute counseling session.

Cost shouldn't automatically prevent someone from getting support.

Shayla will offer individual counseling in person and virtually for clients ages 13 and older, with services provided under clinical supervision.

We are currently screening prospective clients for September appointments.

If you've been thinking about counseling but cost has been a barrier, or you're simply looking for a warm, supportive space to work through what's happening in your life, this may be an opportunity worth exploring.

What exactly is a Graduate Counselor Intern? 🤔

That's a great question, and one we want clients to feel comfortable asking.
A graduate counselor intern is not someone simply interested in becoming a therapist. Shayla is a master's-level Clinical Mental Health Counseling student at the University of North Florida who has reached the clinical-training portion of her graduate education.

During practicum, graduate counseling students begin applying what they've learned in the classroom to real clinical experiences while receiving structured supervision and mentorship.

That means Shayla is continuing to learn while also being supported in her clinical work.

At RCSS, her experience includes clinical training, observation and shadowing, case consultation, treatment planning, documentation, professional development, and supervised counseling experience.

And she isn't doing that work alone.

Shayla provides graduate intern services under the supervision of Kandi Jackson, LCSW-QS, with ongoing opportunities for consultation, feedback, and professional development. Her existing flyer already identifies this supervision relationship for prospective clients.

Think of it this way:

You aren't simply getting a counselor-in-training. You're receiving care from a developing clinician whose work is supported through supervision.

Shayla is now screening clients for September 2026.

Reduced self-pay rate: $30 per 50-minute session.

Contact RCSS to learn whether working with Shayla may be right for you.

Journaling is a powerful tool that can help you process emotions, reduce stress, and better understand your thoughts. Writing allows you to slow down, organize your feelings, and reflect on experiences without judgment. Over time, journaling can help you recognize patterns, celebrate personal growth, and identify areas where you may need additional support.📝

There is no right or wrong way to journal. You can write about your day, express your emotions, list things you are grateful for, or answer prompts such as "What am I feeling today?" "What is something I am proud of?" or "What is one thing I need to let go of?" The goal is not perfection but creating a space where you can be honest with yourself.✨
