Attention diet and exercise ladies! If you are overweight, underweight, or changing weight rapidly—AND having hormone issues—this post is for YOU!
Hormone levels are like a dashboard reading on your health. You wouldn’t start out on a long road trip with no gas, and your body doesn’t want to travel down the reproductive road without enough fuel.
How does your body know you have enough fuel? That it can afford to loose blood in a monthly period? That it can fuel your body PLUS another inside you?
LEPTIN
Your body produces a signaling molecule which tells your brain when there is enough fuel. That signaling hormone is called leptin.
HUNGER & HORMONES
You may know leptin as the hormone that controls hunger. But leptin’s signaling action for hormones and fertility is completely separate from the way that it controls appetite and metabolism.
BALANCED
Leptin is secreted by your adipose (fat) tissue. When you have plenty of fat tissue, leptin levels are high, hunger is satisfied, and the body is clear to be fertile.
If leptin does NOT get to the brain, you feel hungry no matter what you eat, and you may have problems with periods or pregnancy.
What prevents leptin from signaling your brain?
IMBALANCED
The 3 primary reasons leptin is not signaling your brain to make hormones are
👉Too little adipose tissue
👉Too much adipose tissue
👉Sudden changes affecting adipose tissue
LEPTIN & FERTILITY
Can high or low leptin affect your ovaries? Yes! Leptin signals the ovaries. Additionally, leptin IN the ovarian follicles needs to be at the right amount. Too high of leptin levels in the follicles is linked to decreased fertility.
Leptin signals the hypothalamus in the brain, which signals the pituitary to make FSH and LH. As one study states, “Serum leptin levels are a critical link between sufficient nutrition and the function of the hypothalamic–pituitary–gonadal (HPG) axis.”
TEST, DON’T GUESS
If you are unsure whether low leptin (or high leptin insensitivity) is causing hormone or fertility problems, you can get a simple, inexpensive blood test done to check your leptin levels.
